Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse rooftop to open as art space.

by Ora-Ïto. [Marseille] France
metalocus, PEDRO NAVARRO
French designer Ora-Ïto is transforming the rooftop of Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse housing block in Marseille and will be open to the public this summer as a contemporary art space. Originally intended as an outdoor gymnasium for the self-contained community of Cité Radieuse – the first building in Le Corbusier's influential Unité d'Habitation project – the rooftop gradually fell into disuse and was put up for sale three years ago.

French designer Ito Morabito, who works under the brand name Ora-Ïto stepped in to buy the space and set to work transforming it into an arts centre with a cafe, shop and artists' residences. A 1950s extension was removed to reveal a sun deck and shower room with coloured tiles. Cité Radieuse was damaged by fire last August when a fire broke out in a first floor apartment.

HYPERREALISM 1967 ‐ 2012

Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza [MAD] 22/03 > 09/06/2013
metalocus, INÉS LALUETA
Art, Exhibitions
The exhibition now presented at the Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza offers a survey of Hyperrealism that starts with the great US masters of the first generation such as Richard Estes, John Baeder, Tom Blackwell, Don Eddy, Ralph Goings and Chuck Close, continues in Europe with their influence on subsequent generations, and concludes in the present day.

In the late 1960s a group of artists emerged in the United States who painted scenes and objects from daily life with a high degree of realism, using photography as the basis for their works and achieving international recognition at Documenta in Kassel in 1972.

Hyperrealism is not a closed movement and today, more than forty years after it arose, many of the pioneering figures continue to be active while new artists deploy the...

Spiral Art Gallery II.

By Atelier Deshaus. [Jiading New Town, Shanghai] China.
metalocus, SERGIO CIDONCHA.
Created from the charm that defines his twin sister-gallery, about which we spoke yesterday, Spiral Art Gallery II is another pavilion with which it is supplemented the project of these Chinese architects, Atelier Deshau. With cozy lines and a perfect way to blend into the landscape, the authors tell that it is also in its inside where the game resides, open and closed spaces those relate to the environment.

Memory of project.

Using spiral is to give the different ways of “open” and “close” between the ground floor and upper floor: the ground floor is back towards the courtyard and slightly lower than the ground, while the upper floor faces outward to the open landscape. And...

Spiral Art Gallery I.

By Atelier Deshaus. [Jiading New Town, Shanghai] China.
metalocus, SERGIO CIDONCHA.
The architects used the spiral of significative way, because it has a great importance in the project, being the organizer element of the program building and it makes that spaces change continuously, as well as height and inclination of the walls, the views from the gallery. A project where nature, landscape and architecture are fused among them.

Memory of project.

The intention of spiral is to establish a way to see scenery. A gestalt is invaded by a spiral with inner space of privacy and some primitive senses. Interior space is gradually transforming from public to private, most importantly, creating one way...

JUNYA ISHIGAMI. How small? How vast? How archItecture grows?

deSingel [Antwerpen] The Netherlands 08/02 > 16/06/2013
metalocus, JOSÉ JUAN BARBA
Architecture, Exhibitions
Can be invisible Architecture? Architecture like a cloud, like a horizon, like a wood, like a landscape, like water. To Junya Ishigami these are not metaphors. He draws inspiration from the way nature appears to man and aspires to an architecture that floats, that is infinite, light, that flows, is transparent, dissolves and has hardly any substance. It is not the logic of the design, the spatial theory or the structural principle of a building that should stand out.

Ishigami wants his buildings to appeal through their new spatiality and environmental richness. He seeks out the limits of the possible - both human and technical - and calls this 'making a new reality'. It is a quest for the pure and essential in architecture. In the profound and varied world of architecture he operates with an endless sense of wonder.
