This new platform, which was presented last June 6th in Medialab Prado (Madrid), starts with the aim of generating a catalogue of unused buildings, waiting for new tools or strategies that give use and activity to all built remainders of the housing bubble in Spain.

Increasis is created as a response to the expansive and uncontrolled urban development that guided spanish city growth during last years. It offers a bunch of tools, practices and strategies for re-using all built items which are unused, unsold or unfinished.

One of the strong points of the project is the process of locating and calssifying many unused structures and spaces which are now residual, abandoned or empty, and which represent an oportunity for the development of new...

Under the water. Viewpoint by Westpol.

[Vöcklabruck] Austria

Architecture, Urbanisme
A small path leading to a small promontory in the middle of a pond, this path is bounded on either side by two concrete walls. The trail descends down to a circular enclosure where the promontory is used as a informal seat and where the visitor has the visual level of the water near, a simple gesture that displaces the common viewpoint to see the pond. A change of perspective that adds value to the landscape.

This intervention, designed by  Westpol, in 2007, allows visitors to have a different view. The project is located in Vöcklabruck, Austria.

The last intervention in Art Basel uses the simulation of the hard conditions in certain urban areas of some cities (particularly of South America, Asia or Africa) as material for design. The situation is starting to be offensive, as this strategy is used repeatedly in the world of design.

On the occassion of the "Bienal Iberoamericána", in Medellín, about a year and a half ago, I attended the presentation of a professor that had proposed a particular exercise to his students: the design of a luxury hotel in a "favelas" (shanty town). Understandably, part of the attendants saw in the proposal not a formal or academic rethoric, but a lack of judgement and knowledge of reality on behalf of the professor. A reality that scores...

The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.

The Human Scale meets thinkers, architects and urban planners across the globe and show us a a critical look at the way we build and use our cities. Assumptions about modernity are questioned, as director Andreas M. Dalsgaard urges the viewer to imagine what would happen when we put “people into the center of our equations”.

AJAC Awards "urban planing - landscape" José Javier Fernández, Architect. Congratulations!! The adaptation of the rivers to urban life is a complex operation, which also tends to incorporate a change of use, or as in this case, also to reuse the elements from heavy industry and ports. This proposal on the Swedish city of Gothenburg has a wide range of goals that go from connecting neighborhoods to reducing pollutants.

Memory or project.

The City of Gothenburg was founded in 1621 in the middle of struggle for both land and commerce. During the 19th century an increase of scale and systematization of mechanical workshops and early textile industries took place. Later on,...

#occupygezi architecture

Gezi Park [Istambul] Turkey
metalocus, JOSÉ JUAN BARBA
Since 15M, map out the architecture of the settlements has been a constant idea. The penultimate occupation of a place, in this case in Turkey has prompted a group of architects to document the temporary structures dismantled by police in Gezi Park in Istanbul, -buildings inspired by the Turks, the first Central Asian nomads . Below, you have some drawings and photographs about their work. Congrats!

The protests in Istanbul indicated one simple thing for architects (designers?): We need new definitions for architecture in situations when architecture is removed from architects. Each unique structure that we encounter in the streets and Gezi Park has its own in-situ design and implementation process. Documentation of these temporary structures is of huge importance for further examination, considering their limited life-cycle. ...
