Oteiza One Coffee Shop is a new establishment located in the heart of Granada, a project by Bauart studio and Arkygra Arquitectos. The coffee shop is located on the ground floor of a 19th-century building near Granada Cathedral. The project is an example of modern architecture, with clear references to its name: a tribute to the internationally renowned sculptor Jorge de Oteiza.

The idea of creating a space that would be a focal point for coffee lovers and, at the same time, combining this with a careful interior spatial treatment—visible in the furniture, lighting, and layout— is a key point that appropriately articulates this project's interest.

The most striking feature of Bauart studio and Arkygra Arquitectos is the steel: recycled steel from different parts of Andalusia, used throughout the furniture, through folding patterns that pay homage to the search for space and emptiness posed in Oteiza's sculptures. The use of this steel allows for a playful use of different textures and colour tones. The details inherent to recycled materials, such as rust and residual paint, make each piece unique and distinct, creating a seamless yet diverse space.

Another key element of the project is the control of light: large windows create an open and bright space that invites visitors in, and the use of vertical steel slats on another facade facilitates the creation of an interplay of light and shadow that offers privacy without sacrificing the connection to the exterior. The artificial lighting has been carefully chosen, with low intensity, to emphasise natural light, accentuating the steel's characteristics and details.

Description of project by Bauart studio, Arkygra Arquitectos

The Oteiza One Coffee Shop, located in the heart of Granada, is a unique small-scale space that merges the past with the present, combining modern industrial architecture with the city's rich history. This café, housed in a 19th century building near Granada's iconic cathedral, is a destination for both gourmet coffee lovers and appreciators of design and sustainability.

The protagonist material of the Oteiza One is steel that has been partly recycled, carefully selected from different parts of Andalusia. This approach is not only aesthetically stunning, but also reflects a commitment to sustainability and the reuse of materials. Recycled steel is integrated into every corner of the space, from the folded tables that are inserted into the steel floor to the structures that support the ceiling.

The café's layout has been carefully designed to offer different atmospheres. On the Calle Cucharas side, the space is more open and luminous, inviting visitors to enjoy the natural light and the view of the street. On the other hand, on the Calle Botero side, metal sheets have been arranged according to a modular mathematical calculation, creating a play of light and shadow that offers privacy without sacrificing the connection with the outside environment.

The Oteiza One Coffee Shop seeks to offer a complete sensory experience by generating a different way of approaching the steel that is to be inserted by adapting sensitively to the historical context of the building, generating a welcoming and contemporary atmosphere. Here, visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee while immersing themselves in the distinctive atmosphere of the place, which celebrates history and innovation, all in a privileged location that attracts tourists and locals alike.

The different colours and textures of steel, especially the recycled steel used in decoration, are not only an expression of sustainability and the reuse of materials, but also an artistic and aesthetic exploration. The aim was to differentiate these variations in order to generate contrasts and fusions that seek a harmonious visual balance.

The diversity of tones and textures in the steel comes from its varied origin in different parts of Andalusia and its previous histories of use. This results in a surface rich in nuances and dimensions that add depth to the space. Natural oxidation, paint residues and marks of previous use bring a unique character to each piece of steel, transforming them into decorative elements that tell a story.

Lighting plays a crucial role in the aesthetics of the café. A low-intensity light has been chosen to allow natural light to take centre stage. This has been achieved through the design of openings and metallic slats that filter the light in a controlled manner, creating an atmosphere that is gradually unveiled. The natural light highlights the variations in the steel, enhancing its textures and colourings, and contributes to the relaxed and natural atmosphere of the place.

Overall, the exploration of the different colours and textures of the steel, combined with carefully considered lighting, creates a space where aesthetics and functionality come together in harmony. Visitors can enjoy the visual experience offered by the café, where each element has been selected and designed to offer an aesthetic and visual balance to generate and enhance relaxation.
