GUEORGUI PINKHASSOV

Gueorgui Pinkhassov. French / Russian, born in Moscow in 1952. Pinkhassov's interest in photography began while still in school. (When he was 11, in school a teacher from another class came in and interrupted our math class. Asked if anyone knew how to make pictures. I needed someone to take photos during a visit to a museum of students from another class. One of my classmates volunteered "Okay, you can go with the teacher, you can leave this class," said the math teacher. As would have liked to be in place!)

After studying film at VGIK (Moscow Institute of Cinematography) began working in the Mosfilm studios as a staff photographer.

In 1978 Pinkhassov joined the Union of Graphic Arts in Moscow and obtained the title of Independent Artist. His work caught the attention of major filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, who invited Pinkhassov to do a report on the set of “Stalker” (1979). The friendship and cooperation between the two artists continued until the death of  Tarkovski.

Pinkhassov moved permanently to Paris in 1985. You joined Magnum Photos in 1988. He works regularly for the international press, particularly for Geo, Actuel, and New York Times Magazine. His first book "Sightwalk" (1998) explores individual details through reflections or particular types of light, often close to abstraction. Later comes the book "Nordmeer" (2006) a poetic journey through the Arctic Ocean.

His work is in major museums and collections and has won international awards for photography as the World Press Photo and the Bourse de la Ville de Paris.
