This is a challenge at the limits of the impossible to create a new way of expressing design research and further developing the emotional dimension of a concept.
Alessi
The idea of bringing out the sound of some design icons goes back to January 2017 and a meeting at the IN-possible Talk held at La Triennale di Milano as part of the
Alessi IN-possible.
The result is the soundtrack that translates the transcendent and ethereal essence of the “Extra Ordinary Metal” project – a series of table accessories that represents a new interpretation of the metal surface through the use of brass, a material already used by Alessi in the 1920s and 30s – into a composition.
The manufacturing tradition of the Alessi workshops is given a modern twist through the old goldsmith’s technique of Etruscan Granulation. In “Extra Ordinary Metal” the granulation, obtained through the cold milling of brass, is applied through a geometric sequence generated by the Fibonacci number. The result is a texture with a harmonious design that interacts with the light.
The development of the soundtrack began with all these elements. The composer remarks: “I create music using sounds captured from everyday life. Everything you can see, you can hear”. History, Design, Culture, Metamorphosis and Decoration are some of the concepts that we can discern though the sounds that Chiara Luzzana has extracted from the objects: trays, baskets, containers, fruit bowls.
“Extra Ordinary Metal a soundtrack by Chiara Luzzana” is a concrete example of what challenging the Impossible means for Alessi: the ability to transpose a metaproject – that is, a series of theoretical, cultural and emotional references – into a new language of communication.
