Position description.
Position title: E level; senior technical design architectural professional I (licensed/unlicensed).
Business unit: Shanghai, Shenzhen Architecture.
Reports to: architect G (associate) or other assigned supervisor.
Synopsis.
An E-level is a project leader responsible for discreet projects or large portions of projects with limited oversight by an assigned supervisor within the SOM triumvirate project structure (design, technical and management). Oversight of an E-level is focused primarily on establishing larger project strategies, resourcing and project performance goals. An E-level is expected to contribute to and execute those goals accordingly and organise their own efforts and the efforts of their team in doing so. They are recognised leaders, have advanced knowledge of architectural practice and are established mentors.
Qualifications.
- completion of five or six-year architectural degree program
- minimum of five years total professional experience; experience required in all phases of project work including preparation of conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction documents and supporting materials
- demonstrated advanced knowledge of architectural practice
- demonstrated experience in leading of teams in the completion of architectural projects
- demonstrated advanced knowledge of building materials, detailing, construction techniques, building systems selection, related engineering principles, sustainability strategies and building codes
- demonstrated practical knowledge of space programming and functional adjacencies
- demonstrated awareness of latest industry wide initiatives, technologies and processes in the A/E/C community
- demonstrated practical understanding of the application of digital tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Digital Project/CATIA, 3dsMAX, Navisworks, Solibri, scripting and programming
- Cantonese speaking or listening skills will be a plus for Shenzhen position
- Mandarin speaking or listening skills will be a plus for Shanghai position
Summary.
- plans, schedules, organises and executes distinct portions of larger projects; or entire scope of smaller projects, with limited oversight from an associate, associate director, director or partner
- provides technical design input and support for the development of the entire design concept for the assigned work under an associate, associate director, director or partner
- with limited supervision, responsible for a project’s or an assigned portion of a project’s technical design effort, subsequent detailed design development, project coordination and quality control efforts during all phases of project work in close collaboration with a senior designer
- develops thorough understanding of design philosophy of projects and provides major input in developing a design and building performance strategy relative to assigned task or area of responsibility and can effectively convey this to assigned team members when appropriate
- assists with the planning, scheduling, and organisation of project plans relative to technical design efforts and processes in collaboration with senior project team
- develops leadership presence office wide as a resource technical design efforts
- seeks creative and innovative solutions to assigned tasks and develops appropriate research and documentation to support these solutions
- drives collaborative relationships with consultants and knowledge resources to ensure that deliverables are coordinated, integrated and support the performance goals of the project
- organises own work efforts and that of his/her assigned team
- contributes to preparation of design documents and leads the detailed development of construction documents during all project phases
- leads review of design and construction documents in order to confirm compliance with the contract deliverables
- leads construction phase (construction administration) services with limited oversight from an associate, associate director, director or partner
- directly assists and mentors assigned team members and, more broadly, architectural levels A, B, C, D and E in the office at large as appropriate
- sets an example for team effort through the spirit of cooperation
- proactively checks and coordinates project documents (including but not limited to drawing set organisation, details, dimensions, interdisciplinary coordination items, specifications coordination, etc.) and is responsible for quality control of such tasks in accordance with SOM’s quality control program
- proactively checks, coordinates and integrates work with other project team members who are working on adjacent or otherwise relevant project areas that may not be in the assigned task area
- performs and/or directs material and building systems research and participates in the coordination and preparation of project specifications
- responsible for construction phase (construction administration) services under periodic oversight of an associate, associate director, director or partner and oversees fellow team members and direct reports in CA tasks
- reviews shop drawings and sample submittals and supervises fellow team members and direct reports in the reviews
- coordinates and develops responses to contractor questions, inquiries, RFI’s etc. and supervises fellow team members and direct reports to that end
- prepares punch-lists and field observation reports and supervises fellow team members and direct reports to that end
- makes appropriate value judgments with respect to field corrective work that supports the design concept and performance goals of the project
- oversees project document control tasks and maintains quality control of such tasks in accordance with SOM’s quality control program
- demonstrates detailed knowledge of local office standards, policies and procedures and can direct others in the use of those resources
- actively supports compliance with BIM/CAD project standards and procedures
- demonstrates leadership with other senior technical design professionals, associates, associate directors and the technical director on assigned project in terms of implementing SOM standard procedures and protocols to assure continuity and consistency of project documentation across the firm in support of overall firm wide goals
- participates in the development of local office standards, policies, and procedures
- seeks to build an external presence at industry events, conferences, organisations and beyond
- is actively pursuing or has achieved professional accreditation and licensure
- is actively pursuing or has achieved LEED professional accreditation beyond “Green Associate”
