From its origin up to more recent times, the concept of the Universal Exhibition has contributed through history to the diffusion and the progress of technological, artistic and cultural achievements. Nowadays, the spreading of different types of world meetings is generating a debate about their proper development models in relation to the strategic management, in all that they represent as an effective catalysts of transformation in the field of urban planning. The project of the Universal Exhibition of Seville 1992 was expressly focused on a perspective of continuity and with the intention of extending its revitalizing effects beyond the limits of the exhibition area. Once the event was concluded, most of the constructed architecture and the infrastructure would form a part of both urban and productive fabrics of the city. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of Expo '92, the International Seminar on World Events and Urban Change constitutes an opportunity to reflect on Seville's specific case and the chance to compare it with other processes of change related to events of great impact in other cities.
The International Seminar proposes three sections. The first will bring together case studies and research on historical and recent world events such as the Universal Exhibitions, sports competitions of worldwide interest, international cultural or commercial events, emphasizing their origin, history, processes of configuration and architecture. The second section will be dedicated to urban transformation and its new management models, the creation of special administrative tools, as well as the media interest which is always awoken by world events. A third section will collect the analysis of the case studies, their influences on others and the projections for the future under the different perspectives of architecture, urban planning, social studies and sustainability.
