The rehabilitation of the former covered riding arena located in Madrid treats to recover the memory of the place, highlighting the existing values of the old building with the relationship between the environment and the program, developing an enclosure of wooden slats improving the energy performance.

BETA.Ø architecture office ensures with this project the maximum comfort inside the building and reduce the energy consumption through different effects of transparency, reflections, lights and shadows filtered and projected through a first transparent polycarbonate skin and a second skin that acts as protection against solar radiation made by wooden strips.
Description of the project by BETA.Ø architecture office
Carrying out the rehabilitation from economy and the rationality, the project highlights the values of the existent building from the way to solve the relationship with their environment and the program through formal and constructive forcefulness.
Developed this sensitivity to the project first of all the façade of asbestos is removed because it dates from 1963 and it is harmful to human health and the design of a new enclosure that also contributes to enhancing the architectural, environmental and landscape values of the existing building, trying to optimize its energy performance.
The new facade has been carefully designed considering the stunning natural environment in which the current covered riding arena, surrounded by lush vegetation and large trees deciduous. From the outside the new enclosure mimetize the natural wooded setting, through games of transparencies, reflections, lights and shadows filtered and projected through their two skins.
A first transparent polycarbonate skin on a existing steel substructure which ensures the seal and improves overall quality hygrothermal place, allowing the necessary solar collection in the months less heated with greater use of the facilities and cross ventilation of the covered riding arena in the hottest months of the year.
A second skin that acts as protection against solar radiation in the hottest months and in turn it allows the entry of solar radiation in the months less heated. This skin is made of a framework of wooden strips, inspired by the perimeter trees, holding wooden slats arranged horizontally that form the lattice carefully studied.
On the inside a selective and respectful renovation has been developed contributing to enhance and reactivate the intrinsic values of the original building through specific interventions like minor acupuncture operations.

Borja Peña / Founder & Partner Architect.- Borja studied at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) and the Technische Universität in Darmstadt, between 1992 and 2000. He subsequently concluded his doctoral studies in the Architectural Projects Department at the ETSAM.
He worked as an assistant professor of Architectural Projects at the ETSAM from 2001 to 2004 and has also been a guest professor at the Universidad Camilo José Cela and the Universidad San Pablo CEU in Madrid.
The extensive training and experience that Borja has accumulated over years of collaboration with prestigious architectural firms, such as that of Rafael Moneo, has enabled him to establish a highly professional practice, having received numerous national and international awards for his professional endeavours, notably including the recent 2012-2014 VETECO ASEFAVE Award for Best Renovation for the work on the covered equestrian arena in Madrid. Furthermore, in 2012, BETA.Ø was named one of the most interesting emerging practices in Madrid by the ARQUIA/PRÓXIMA cultural programme, sponsored by the Fundación Caja de Arquitectos.
His projects have been featured in several specialised publications, books and architecture blogs.
Ernesto Sierra Díaz / Partner Architect.- Ernesto studied at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM), where he graduated with a double major in Building and Urban Planning. He received the Ángel Herrera Award for Best Academic Record for the years 1995-1998.
From 2002 to 2007, he collaborated with several renowned architecture firms, including Sancho-Madridejos and Frechilla & López-Peláez. In 2005, he founded Moho Arquitectos, based in Murcia, where he was a partner until 2010. During this period, he developed several projects of varying scales, won national and international awards, participated in conferences and exhibitions, and his work appeared in several architecture magazines and blogs. He joined BETA.Ø in 2011, becoming a partner in 2015.
Xabier Ortega / Partner Architect.- Xabier studied at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of University of Navarra (ETSAUN) from 2006 to 2012, where he obtained Merit Award on his Thesis Project.
After working with various architecture firms and participating in numerous design collaborations in the areas of fashion and visual arts, he joined BETA.Ø in 2013, becoming a partner in 2015.

Borja Peña studied in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of Madrid and the Technische Universität of Darmstadt since 1992 to 2000. Subsequently, he concluded his doctoral degree in the Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos of the ETSAM. He is an assistant professor of architectural projets in the ETSAM of Madrid since 2000-2004. He has also been invited as a professor to the Camilo José Cela University and San Pablo CEU of Madrid.
His extensive training and experience accumulated over years of collaboration with prestigious architectural firms such as Rafael Moneo have enabled it to establish its own office high professional level, having received numerous awards for their work. His work has been awarded several national and international competitions: Competition of NSA 4 to 122 subsidized housing of the EMVS; Competition for new types of subsidized housing in Cantabria; Competition for the development of 75 VPO in Adelfas; Europan 5, Europan 6 International Competition for 325 subsidized housing in Lote4 to the advanced Quarter of Toledo; International Competition for 260 subsidized housing in the same neighborhood and Lote7 Competition Office Building in Paseo de la Castellana 94. And their projects have been published in several magazines. In the year 2012 he was distinguished from among 991 nominations as one of 7 most exciting emerging offices in Madrid, under the ARQUIA / NEXT cultural program promoted by the Caja de Arquitectos Foundation.
Miguel de Guzmán
Miguel de Guzmán born in Rio de Janeiro in 1972. He is an architect (ETSAM. 1998) and also architectural photographer. He has been professor in the Graphic Ideation Department at CEU Architecture School and the Photography Department of Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid. Since 2008 Imagen Subliminal is the broadcast platform through which he shows his work as photographer and videographer. As an Architect, he has been awarded with the Dionisio Hernadez Gil Prize for the Diocesan Priest House in Plasencia (work done together with Andres Jaque and Enrique Krahe), and was selected for the 2005 Spanish Architecture Bienal. As a Photographer he has been finalist in ABC Journal Art Awards 2000, El Mundo Photography awards 2001. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions (Circuitos de Arte Joven, Galeria Vírgenes, Photo España…). The book "Miguel de Guzmán Architectural Photography" contains a selection of photographs taken between the years 2003 and 2013, and which give example of a new way in the making of architectural photography.
