JDS development group has announced the opening of the American Copper Buildings’ amenities, including the skybridge that links the pair of copper-clad luxury rental towers on Manhattan’s East River Waterfront.
The project was designed by SHoP architects, the towers boldly change the new york skyline with angled silhouettes that give them a ‘dancing’ appearance. The skybridge that connects the two towers, and which holds the development’s 5,575 square meter of amenities, is the first major skybridge to be built in New York in over 80 years, allowing residents to swim from one tower to another 300 feet (91 meters) in the air.
The dancing copper towers redefining the East River. The American Copper Buildings presents two bold and dynamic residential towers on New York City’s East River. Clad in copper, this living material patina gracefully over time, representing the tallest copper-clad building in the world. The approximately 800-unit luxury rental community reaches 41 and 48 stories in height with an iconic skybridge connecting the two towers.
The development features an amenity package that sets a new benchmark for rental development, including the skybridge indoor lap pool and lounge, a rooftop deck and infinity pool, fitness center, and spa. The dancing towers bring energy and inspiration for future innovative growth and resilient design in its neighborhood and along the East River.

Description of project by SHoP architects
Working with JDS Development Group, SHoP has designed a residential complex that has become a bold new presence on Manhattan's East River skyline. Evoking the proportions of the nearby United Nations Secretariat, the sculptural design—two copper-clad towers that bend in the middle to meet at a skybridge—brings a new dynamism to an overlooked area of the city.
The skybridge, the highest in Manhattan and the first to be built in decades, houses a lap pool, lounge, and other shared amenities for the towers' 761 apartments, 20% of which are offered below market rates. SHoP also completed the interior design of the lobbies and public areas, as well as the units, including millwork, cabinetry, and finishes.
A second pool and lounge are sited on the roof of the east tower, while the top of the west tower hosts a facility for emergency electricity generation. Occupying a riverside site inundated during Superstorm Sandy, the complex is designed to achieve service self-sufficiency, with in-house power supplied to designated outlets in every unit.
