The Einderheide Watchtower, projected by NEXT architects and intended for both humans and animals, serves a dual purpose: in addition to offering panoramic views of the Brabantse Kempen forest from a height of 26 meters, it provides a refuge for bats.

The design is an understated icon; the tower is modest, yet possesses a recognizable and distinctive form that integrates seamlessly into the network of trails within the Einderheide forest.

NEXT architects projected a spiral staircase leading to an observation platform 26 meters high for access to the Einderheide Watchtower. This platform offers striking perspectives during the ascent, thanks to notches at varying heights and on different sides of the structure.

Several niches and cavities have been created at different heights within the tower's structure to provide shelter for arboreal bats. These bat roosts were developed by ecologist Jeroen Mos. The facade is composed of laminated larch columns clad in heat-treated pine, whose rough texture allows bats to perch.

Project description by NEXT architects

Watchtower Einderheide takes recreational visitors to new heights to view and experience the surrounding forest. The 26-metre high wooden construction also provides a habitat for the various bat species present in the area. The design is modest, but has a recognizable and iconic shape that contributes to the identity of Einderheide.

The watchtower is part of the recreational cycling and walking network of the Einderheide forest area and is a resting point and orientation point on the route. The site is located along the flight route of bats and is therefore perfectly suited to accommodate a range of different bat species. At various heights in the structure, a diversity of niches and cavities are created to facilitate different types of habitats, such as winter and summer residences and mating and nesting places.

Visitors go up a spiral staircase to the lookout platform and can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area at 26 meters height. On the way up, the notches at different levels offer a surprising experience of the trees and the forest. The restrained but characteristic landmark is the final piece in the series of area icons that give the N69 provincial road a clear and recognizable identity.

The tower consists largely of a laminated wood construction with notches at different heights. The wooden construction blends seamlessly into the forest landscape and the material is ideally suited for the bat accommodation, as it mimics the natural habitat of various species that live in trees. The roughness of the wood offers the animals grip to land and crawl away. In addition to the winter shelter in the basement of the tower, 20 specially designed habitats are integrated into the facade that provide a habitat for a variety of bat species.

NEXT architects is an international architectural firm founded in 1999 by Bart Reuser, Marijn Schenk, Michel Schreinemachers and John van de Water. The practice works on research and design projects in the fields of urban planning, architecture, interior design and infrastructure. The office is based in Amsterdam, and in 2004, it opened a second studio in Beijing.

In recent years, NEXT has demonstrated its capacity to develop large and complex projects commissioned by provinces, municipalities and private clients such as COD, Amvest, Lingotto and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The studio has built an international reputation through projects that operate at the intersection of architecture, urbanism and landscape, often developed through multidisciplinary collaborations and focused on creating places of connection within their social and environmental contexts.

NEXT has received various awards for its work, including the Nationale Bouwprijs (2017), the NRP Gulden Feniks (nomination, 2017), the Geurt Brinkgrevebokaal (nomination, 2016), and the Dutch Design Award (nomination, 2016). NEXT has also been featured in national and international publications and media, including WIRED, Monocle, Financial Times, Het Financieele Dagblad, Elsevier and CNN.

Recent projects include the residential tower Stork in the Oostenburg district of Amsterdam (2024), developed as part of a mixed housing complex combining student accommodation, housing for elderly residents and shared workspaces. Another recent work is the wooden Watchtower Einderheide in Bergeijk, conceived as a nature-inclusive observation tower that incorporates habitats for bat species and was longlisted for the Archello Awards 2024 (Small Project of the Year).

Today, the firm operates with an international team of around thirty architects and designers working from its Amsterdam studio in the Kauwgomballenfabriek creative complex, collaborating with a broad network of international partners on projects ranging from housing and cultural buildings to infrastructure and landscape interventions.
