Architecture studio Studio VDGA was commissioned to design Street Project, a sensitive brick clubhouse, in Pune, a sprawling city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, known for the grand Aga Khan Palace, built in 1892 and now a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

Studio VDGA has reimagined the conventional clubhouse as a small part of the city, as a living street.

"Streets are much more than just physical paths; they are where life unfolds, where different stories, cultures, and connections converge. They serve as the backdrop for shared experiences, friendships, and memories," said Studio VDGA.

Named as "The Street", Studio VDGA designed this unusual 15,000 sq ft clubhouse for a new community on the outskirts of Pune, creating a series of indoor and outdoor spaces, which together "create a rhythmic flow, encouraging pauses, interaction, and togetherness".

Unlike most clubhouses, it was conceived as an open space fostering social interaction among the 240 surrounding plot owners, each of them with a surface area between 150 and 175 m², offering families the opportunity to build their home in an increasingly rare and unaffordable environment in dense urban areas.

Inspired by traditional Indian cities, it evokes meandering streets with shaded spots to pause and converse, as well as welcoming plazas, courtyards and lanes. Only a water tower on the southern side of the site reminds us of traditional Indian towns and villages, where water towers served as landmarks.

The program unfolds through pathways, brick jalis, gazebos, an amphitheatre, a pool and open dining areas—spaces that encourage encounters and connection with nature, where residents can meet and celebrate events together in many venues

"The architecture encourages interaction, movement, and shared experiences. It’s not just a building but a living street where activities overlap, people meet organically, and the boundaries between built and open spaces blur."

The complex designed by Studio VDGA features a pool, framed by arches and tall brick walls, which provides a calm and secluded atmosphere.

Constructed with locally sourced brick, Indian stone, and IPS flooring, the project embraces regional craft and eco-friendly methods, where buildings are integrated into the landscape and partially submerged into the earth, following the old principles of ‘cut and fill’ construction to minimise their visual impact on the landscape.

"What I personally love is the honest use of locally sourced materials like Indian limestone, red clay bricks, and IPS (Indian Patent Stone), a traditional flooring made using a mix of cement, sand, and fine marble powder," says Gugarii.

Though the budget was modest,  it never limited their vision of creating a high-quality community space, driving climate-responsive, low-maintenance solutions, using Vastu principles and site contours shaped natural light, ventilation, and comfort. The result is a sustainable, collective heart for the community.

"We embraced the Indian way of living – where celebrations, conversations, and daily life spill out into open, shared spaces. That spirit of openness and informality was something we consciously celebrated."

Studio VDGA is an architecture and design studio founded in 2003 by Deepak Gugarii, based in Pune, India. Deepak Gugarii graduated as an architect from the College of Architecture in Kolhapur in 1998, and since then, his work has been characterized by the development of projects that combine contextual sensitivity and spatial innovation.

His work is based on the exploration of new areas of design and expression. Perceptual design can evoke such intense feelings that it can alter users' sensory experiences. He believes that architecture is a journey through spaces, manifested through various media: sun, shadows, air, and form are just some of the premises on which it is built. A deep understanding of the urban fabric, in tune with his design premises, results in the spaces he desires.

Studio VDGA's work covers a wide range of homes, restaurants, offices, camps, resorts, corporate homes, and product design, from rustic to sumptuous, to name a few. With projects spread across India, Vietnam, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the studio aims to create projects that reward the viewer with a lasting impression.

The studio's work has been widely published, awarded, and recognized in the finest architecture, hospitality, and travel forums worldwide. Over 70 highly regarded national and international awards and recognitions have further recognized the studio's efforts.

“We do not want to give the world a heavy and obtuse architecture, but rather to create clever ideas. Ephemeral design languages are not for us… we are here to inhabit more persistent and lasting concepts.”

Deepak Gugarii, Principal Architect and Founder.
