Using a dynamic and minimalist approach, urban artist SpY redefines the space of the former arms factory in Oviedo with “Blankets 2,” a massive art installation where, from hundreds of rescue blankets, he creates a sea of gold and silver with an ever-changing appearance.

The intervention reflects sunlight and bathes both the space and the visitors with its oscillating surface, creating an enveloping and whispering landscape produced by the sound texture that subtly emerges from the movement of the blankets, resulting in a complex experience of meditation and reflection.

SpY creates a stage that encourages interaction and active contemplation from a surface of six thousand meters that results in a living entity of constant evolution and movement whose wind currents create a sea of reflections, wave patterns and sound fields.

The installation incorporates four fundamental factors through which objects transcend their function, these being the form, which establishes the aesthetic and symbolic base; the public, who navigates through the work and actively participates in it; the movement, which creates a constant kinetic cycle; and time, understood as an experience that reveals new facets at every moment.

Project description by SpY

“Blankets 2” is a massive installation that unfolds over an area of 6,000 square meters, intervening the old arms factory in Oviedo.

This artistic intervention is composed of hundreds of salvage blankets, forming a sea of gold and silver with an ever-changing appearance. The work is activated by the wind currents that flow through the space, creating undulating patterns and solemn sound fields in a continuous choreographic cycle. This interaction turns the installation into a living entity, in constant evolutionary motion.

The gold and silver surface of the blankets reflects the sunlight at different times of the day, generating subtle effects that bathe both the space and the visitors as they walk through the installation. A sound texture subtly emerges with the continuous movement of the blankets, imperceptibly revealing itself and creating a whispering and enveloping acoustic landscape.

In this kinetic installation by SpY, the objects transcend their merely aesthetic function by incorporating four fundamental factors: the formal element, which establishes the aesthetic, symbolic and conceptual base; the audience, who is invited to navigate the work from various perspectives, actively participating in the experience; the movement, which infuses life into the installation by creating a constant kinetic cycle; and time, understood as a simultaneous experience in the present, revealing new facets of the piece at each moment.

With a dynamic and minimalist approach, SpY redefines space, inviting visitors to reconsider their perception of place and movement, in a setting that encourages reflection, interaction and active contemplation.

SpY is an urban artist whose first endeavors date back to the mid-eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to explore other forms of artistic communication in the street. His work involves the appropiation urban elements through transformation or replication, commentary on urban reality, and the interference in its communicative codes.

The bulk of his production stems from the observation of the city and an appreciation of its components, not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. His ludic spirit, careful attention to the context of each piece, and a not invasive, constructive attitude, unmistakably characterize his interventions.

SpY's pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience.
