Following the recently completed Maggie Centre, designed by OMA in Glasgow, now confirmed the order of two new centers: the project commissioned to the office of Norman Foster in his hometown, at the Christie Hospital in south Manchester, and the project commissioned to the Steven Holl, for a new center in St Bartholomew's (Barts) hospital in London. This latter is known because, some watercolors on project, are currently on show at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition.
The cartel of architectural stars who have participated, or are developing projects are: by Richard Rogers (RIBA Stirling Prize 2009), by Frank O. Gehry in Dundee, by Snøhetta (design in progress) in the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the Wilkinson Eyre, whose work began in Oxford this summer, or Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) leading from the waiting year 2009.
"El diseño arquitectónico de un Maggie’s está inspirado y tira de la idea de una arquitectura que se relaciona con la curación. Un espacio que refleja la historia y experiencia de la persona y no la historia de su enfermedad."
Benedetta Tagliabue. Architect, EMBT
Who Maggie was: Maggie Keswick Jencks was the co-founder, alongside Charles Jencks, of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. Maggie was a writer, a landscape designer, a painter and a mother of two.
"Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died in 1995 due to cancer, had a plan to create a beautiful place where you can learn about the disease, receiving counseling or alternative treatment for free. A place where architecture and design play a crucial role." Maggie's Centre.
