Azcárate Gómez
César Azcárate Gómez (Bilbao, 1966) is an architect and holds a doctorate in architecture from the University of Navarra, where he has also been an associate professor since 1991. Since 1992, he has worked at IDOM (formerly ACXT), where he is a partner and director of the Sports Architecture department. His doctoral thesis, Forgotten Cathedrals: The National Network of Silos in Spain (1949-1990), received the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize in 2009 and reflects his interest in industrial architecture as heritage and in the reinterpretation of disused functional structures.
His work is characterized by contemporary architecture that is sensitive to context, natural light, and human scale. Among his most notable works are the new San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao and the Bilbao Exhibition Centre. He also pursues photographic work focused on spaces undergoing transformation or abandonment, exploring the relationship between architecture, time, and memory. His dual profile —professional and teaching— combines technical practice with research and critical reflection on the cultural role of architecture.
