Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923–New York, 1997), an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, was one of the leading figures of Pop Art. In his early years, he focused on using images drawn from comic books and advertising as the basis for his paintings. In the 1980s, he began enlarging sketches of Expressionist paintings, which he subsequently reinterpreted and adapted through his montage techniques. One of these paintings by Lichtenstein is used as the background for his portrait image.
Trained at the Art Students League of New York and Ohio State University, Lichtenstein developed a visual language during the 1950s that was initially close to Abstract Expressionism, before redirecting his work toward an investigation of mass visual culture. From 1961 onward, he incorporated comic-strip panels, advertisements, and techniques derived from industrial reproduction, enlarging them through black outlines, flat colors, and Ben-Day dot patterns. This strategy was not intended simply to reproduce the original images mechanically, but rather to examine the mechanisms of reproduction, seriality, and visual construction associated with consumer culture.
Works such as Whaam! (1963) and Drowning Girl (1963) consolidated a practice based on the appropriation, enlargement, and transformation of pre-existing images. From the mid-1960s onward, he extended this analysis to the history of art itself, reinterpreting motifs associated with Picasso, Matisse, Monet, and Abstract Expressionism. At the same time, he developed sculptures, reliefs, and graphic works, maintaining a sustained interest in the tension between image, object, and representation.
In his later decades, he expanded this vocabulary through interiors, landscapes, mirrors, and series of brushstrokes, in which gestures traditionally associated with spontaneity were transformed into carefully constructed signs. His work occupies a central position in the critical reassessment of American visual culture in the second half of the twentieth century.
