Vanmechelen

Koen Vanmechelen (Belgium, Sint-Truiden, 26.08.1965) is an internationally renowned artist whose work spans a wide range of disciplines. He is considered one of the most versatile thinkers of our time, operating at the intersection of art, science, philosophy, and community.

As an eternal migrant, Vanmechelen travels the world in search of answers to fundamental questions—both timeless and urgently relevant today—around identity, diversity, globalization, and human rights. He weaves these ever-evolving responses into enigmatic works and long-term projects.

His research and interdisciplinary initiatives invite others to collaborate, generating awareness and a global movement of communities. Together, they reflect on humanity’s legacy as an animal species and explore the different ways we choose to live and evolve collectively.

In 2010, Vanmechelen was awarded an honorary doctorate by Hasselt University, and in 2013, he received the prestigious Golden Nica Hybrid Art Award (Linz) and the Global Artist’s Award (Venice). His work has been presented across nearly every continent, with exhibitions at the Uffizi Gallery (Florence), the V&A Museum (London), ZKM (Karlsruhe), and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana (Cuba), among others.

In addition to his regular participation in the Venice Biennale, his work has been featured at the Biennials of Moscow, Havana, Dakar, and Poznań, the Guangzhou Triennial, Expo Shanghai 2010, Manifesta 9, and dOCUMENTA (13). As a speaker, he has been invited to present at the World Economic Forum (2008) and several TED conferences.
