Singer and writer Little Simz released Flood on February 26. The single served as the first preview of her sixth and most recent studio album, Lotus. Hailed as one of the best rappers of recent years, she joins forces with Obongjayar and Moonchild Sanelly, under the direction of Salomon Lighthelm, to express her fury in a dark music video filled with references to bullfighting.

The video reinterprets the extravagance and symbolism of the bullring. Post-punk rhythms, warlike percussion, and flashes of light flickering against a black background create the perfect setting for the singer to unleash her suppressed rage at the person who has wronged her, like a bull during a charge.

It’s a powerful and visually arresting piece that uses tension and imagery to transform an act of confrontation into a ritual of liberation and transformation. Through this sequence, Little Simz reveals part of the emotional process that symbolises the birth of a flower in murky waters—Lotus.

Little Simz is the author of the song’s most aggressive verses—those that point directly at and tear apart the actions of the person in question. Obongjayar is responsible for delivering these lines in the song’s introduction, with phrases that later resurface in the chorus: intervals of intimate reflection in which the artist seeks to free herself from her negative thoughts without straying from the path of sanity.

A flawless set of lyrics that, combined with the force of the instrumental and the striking black-and-white imagery, keeps the viewer immersed in the video, with tension running high. It captures how a bull’s charge can be transformed into a ritual of release and transformation, revealing part of the process that symbolizes the birth of a flower in murky waters: Lotus.
