Urko Sanchez Architects

Urko Sanchez Architetcs is an architectural practice founded in Mombasa, Kenya by architect Urko Sanchez in 2007. It currently has offices in Nairobi and Madrid.

Urko Sanchez was born in Madrid, he started his studies in 1988 and finished them in 1998. During his life he has travelled to many places. On one of his trips he visited the island of Lamu in Kenya, and it was there that he fell in love with the island, deciding to do a project there. Later in Mombasa he became an official architect in Kenya and opened Urko Sanchez Architetcs.

Urko Sanchez Architects thrives in the dynamic contexts of Africa and the Global South by embracing unexpected environments and actively listening to clients and local communities. Their approach combines a strong international identity with deep local roots, ensuring that projects are both globally competitive and contextually relevant.

The team values open-mindedness, humility, and respect, blending new discoveries with their expertise. At their Nairobi office, they seek professionals who not only understand the local context but also have a global perspective—flexible, self-driven, and adaptable to ever-changing conditions. Creativity and imagination are central to their work, enabling them to envision and bring to life unique projects in remote and exotic locations.

This diversity of experience and vision makes Urko Sanchez Architects a team committed to creating sustainable, context-sensitive designs that balance local authenticity with global sophistication.
