Vellés Montoya

Javier Vellés Montoya is a Spanish architect born in Bilbao, Spain, in 1943.

He studied at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid. For several years, he worked closely with Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza. He completed his studies and began teaching, first in drawing courses (1972-1975), and after completing his studies in Project III and Final Project. In 1975, he opened his studio.

Some of his most important works include the restoration and reinforcement of the walls of Melilla, the complete restoration of the Chapel of San Isidro and the Bishop's Chapel, both in the Church of San Andrés in Madrid, and the Umbráculo in Cercedilla (the latter with architect María Luisa López Sardá).

He has been associated with the School of Architecture of the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Toledo (eaT) since its founding.

In 2018, he published the book Oíza, a cross between a biography and a monograph, offering a personal account, from his perspective as a disciple, of Oíza's life and work. He received the 2018 COAM First Prize ex aequo for the book.
