The exhibition of architectural backdrops from classic anime films in House of Illustration, in London, features over 100 exquisite technical drawings and watercolour illustrations from some of the most influential productions in the genre’s 1990s heyday, including Production I.G’s artwork for Ghost in the Shell.

Esta increible exposición ya visitó otras ciudades, entre ellas Madrid, hace cinco años, ahora en Londres es una buena oportunidad para descubrirla o volver a visitarla. Los artistas crearon un universo de mundos de ficción reflejando la vida real y preocupados por el caótico desarrollo urbano y la erosión de la identidad, reflejando las narrativas de las películas y dando a los antecedentes un papel crucial a jugar. Su trabajo ha tenido una influencia determinante en el estilo de anime que pensamos como típico de hoy.

La muestra incluye las acuarelas de Hiromasa Ogura para Ghost in the Shell, un anime épico que se adelanto a obras pioneras de ciencia ficción como The Matrix y Avatar. Inspirado en las megaciudades emergentes de Asia y basado en fotografías de Hong Kong, el trabajo de Ogura muestra el sorprendente contraste entre una ciudad china abandonada y los rascacielos que se ciernen, sin rostro.

El estilo meticulosamente realista de Takashi Watabe se ha convertido en un sello distintivo de las películas de anime japonesas en su conjunto. Nos muestran sus dibujos a lápiz para la secuela de 2008 Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, así como trabajos de Patlabor: The Movie (1989) y Metropolis (2001), de Mamoru Oshii y Atsushi Takeuchi.

Desde el éxito de Akira (1988) y Ghost in the Shell, las películas de anime japonés han estado en el corazón de la cultura pop mundial. Un remake de acción en vivo de Ghost in the Shell protagonizada por Scarlett Johansson fue estrenado el 31 de marzo de 2017.
