Premio anual de la Fundación Bruno Zevi Foundation, Roma, para Ensayos de Historia y Crítica de arquitectura.

BASES DEL CONCURSO para la quinta edición, 2011

Art. 1
With a view to developing and disseminating the teaching of Bruno Zevi and his method of critical and historical inquiry, the Bruno Zevi Foundation is holding an international competition to award a prize for a historical-critical essay offering an original analysis of an architectural work or theme or an architect of the past or present.

The competition is divided into five sections corresponding to the following themes:

- the key role of space in architecture
- the ancient sources of the modern language
- history as methodology of architectural practice
- the modern language of architecture
- landscape and the zero-degree language of architecture


Art. 2
The competition is open to holders of research doctorates with experience in the fields listed above.

Art. 3
Essays already published in Italy are not eligible.

Art. 4
The languages admitted are Italian, English and French. The essays written in Italian must enclose also the English version.

Art.5
The prize consists of publication of the essay in the Quaderni of the Bruno Zevi Foundation and in the invitation to give a lecture on the occasion of the award.

Art. 6
The prize is awarded annually.

Art. 7
The Jury is renewed every year. In this edition it’s composed of: Alexander Levi, Zeuler Lima, Massimo Locci, Luciana Miotto, Alessandra Muntoni.

Art.8
Those wishing to enter for the competition are required to provide the Bruno Zevi Foundation with the following by no later than June, 30, 2011 (as attested by postmark):

a) completed application form including personal data, details of the section in which the essay is entered, andits title [see enclosure];
b) the complete text of the essay (max. 120,000 keystrokes including notes, etc.) and illustrations on CD with two copies on paper (the digital copy of the essay must show the title but not the author’s name);
c) an abstract (1,500 keystrokes).


Art.9
The essays entered for the competition and not awarded the prize will not be returned. Copies will be catalogued and filed in a specific section of the Bruno Zevi Foundation Library at the disposal of its users.

Art. 10
The winner will receive notification by registered letter of the date of the award, which will also be made public together with the name of the recipient on the site www.fondazionebrunozevi.it.

Bruno Zevi, nació en Roma en 1918. Allí se graduó de la escuela secundaria clásica (1918-1933) en la escuela "Tasso" y se matriculó en la Facultad de Arquitectura. Siguiendo las leyes raciales, dejó Italia en 1938, yendo primero a Londres y luego a los Estados Unidos. Aquí se graduó en la Graduate School of Design en la Universidad de Harvard, presidida por Walter Gropius, y dirigió los "Cuadernos Italianos" del movimiento "Justicia y Libertad" (1933-1944). Descubre a Frank Lloyd Wright, cuya predicación a favor de la arquitectura orgánica seguirá siendo un defensor de por vida. De regreso en Europa en 1943, participó en la lucha antifascista en las filas del Partido de Acción. En 1944 promovió la Asociación de Arquitectura Orgánica (APAO) y al año siguiente fundó la revista "Metron".

Desde 1948 ha sido profesor de Historia de la Arquitectura en el IUAV de Venecia y desde 1964 en la Facultad de Arquitectura de Roma. De 1954 a 2000 tuvo una columna semanal de arquitectura en "Cronache" y luego en "L'Espresso"; los artículos de las primeras décadas se recogen en los veinticinco volúmenes de "Crónicas de la arquitectura" (1945-54). En 1955 fundó la revista mensual "L'architettura-cronache e storia", que dirigió ininterrumpidamente hasta enero de 2000 (1955-64).

Fue galardonado con un título honorífico por las Universidades de Buenos Aires, Michigan y Technion de Haifa; es miembro honorario del Real Instituto de Arquitectos Británicos y del Instituto Americano de Arquitectos, secretario general del Instituto Nacional de Planeamiento Urbano (INU), vicepresidente del Instituto Nacional de Arquitectura (In / arch), académico de San Luca y 'Instituto Internacional de Arquitectura, presidente emérito del Comité Internacional de Críticos de Arquitectura (CIC) (1965-77), presidente del Partido Radical y miembro del Parlamento en la décima legislatura (1978-89).
