The Portuguese architecture studio Diogo Aguiar Studio designed the conversion of an old agricultural building to a wine tourism building in Penafiel, Portugal. The project is based on the spatial potentialities of the pre-existing building and the creation of a visiting route in three acts in Quinta da Aveleda, owned by one of the main green wine producers in the country.

The conversion project takes full advantage of the spirit of the place. The building, dedicated to the exhibition of special wines, is presented as a museum space, which tells the story of the family that for five generations produces green wine in this area.
In opposition to the dense compartmentalization originally existing, the architectural intervention of the Diogo Aguiar Studio is organized in a succession of continuous spaces, formally related to the volume of the building. The building has a tasting room, located in one of the lateral wings, the wine cellar and the mezzanine in the central volume, and the store in the remaining lateral wing. The wine cellar is the transition space between the tasting room and the store, also giving access to the mezzanine.

The objective of the conversion was to create a pause space with an intimate atmosphere. The painted wooden structure recovers the tradition of the north of the country and is based on a classic composition between beige and brown, which existed in other buildings in Quinta da Aveleda.

The entire architectural intervention is based on respect for the identity of the building, the enhancement of its longitudinal character, the reinterpretation of its initial design, the reintegration of original elements, recovering the vernacular essence of a farmhouse, and at the same time building new ones. spatial values.
 

Description of project by Diogo Aguiar Studio

Located in Penafiel, Portugal, Quinta da Aveleda is one of the main producers of vinho verde in the country and enjoys an unusual built heritage surrounded by beautiful gardens.

The reconversion of a former agricultural building (barn) to a wine tourism building is based on the spatial potentialities of the pre-existing building and the creation of a visiting route in three acts. In opposition to the dense compartmentalization originally existing, the building is now organized in a succession of continuous spaces, formally related to the volumetry of the building: the tasting room (complemented by a small kitchen) - in one of the side wings -; the vinoteca and the mezzanine - in the central volume -; and the shop - in the remaining side wing; The tasting room emphasizes the longitudinal character of the building through the linear organization of the long tasting tables, which promote up to a hundred seats; The vinoteca is the space of transition between the tasting room and the shop, also giving access to the mezannine. 

It intends to be an experience space, dedicated to the exhibition of special wines. Chromatically distinct, this is a space of pause that seeks to create an intimate atmosphere. This space is intrinsically related to the mezannine, which is organized in two elevated spaces and a connecting bridge, allowing a dominant reading of the two adjacent spaces on the ground floor. Lastly, the shop has a central layout of furniture, releasing, like the tasting room, the peripheral walls of the building and thus allowing it to receive, among the spans that regulate its rhythm, photographic and written memories and objects.

Inherent to the new design of space, is therefore its understanding as museum space as a spatiotemporal opportunity to narrate the history of the family that for five generations produces the vinho verde in that region.

Recovering the traditional spirit of painted wood - which can be found in many farms in the north of the country, the intervention is based on a classic composition between two colors, the beije and the brown - which also existed in other buildings of Quinta da Aveleda -, attributing this time a greater drama and contemporaneity by the assumption of a strong chromatic contrast between different spaces in direct dialogue.

At the structural level, due to technical impossibilities, the original trusses of the building were not maintained: those of the central body - the elegant timber scissor trusses - were no longer in the ideal state of conservation; and those of the side wings had already been tampered with armoured brick. In this sense, the less usual design of the timber scissor trusses was recovered - initially only existing in the central volume of the building - and now also adapted to the lower bodies of the building. At the same time that they liberate a greater height giving the sensation of a greater spatial amplitude, these unusual asses also assume a singular iconography, characterizing of this particular building, differentiating it from the others.

Concluding, the whole architectural intervention is based on the respect and the reinforcement of the identity of the building, the enhancement of its longitudinal character, the simulation of a non-existent symmetry, the reinterpretation of its initial design, the reintegration of original elements, recovering the vernacular essence of a farm house and endowing, subtly, the building of new spatial values.

Diogo Aguiar Studio is an architecture studio founded in Porto, Portugal, in 2016. The studio works on the frontiers of art and architecture, developing spatial installations and small-scale buildings and interiors, oscillating between public and private contexts.

In 2017, Diogo Aguiar Studio was one of the five Porto architecture studios selected by competition to design an ephemeral pavilion for film venues in Serralves Contemporary Art Museum gardens, as part of “Incerteza Viva” - 32nd São Paulo Bienal. In 2018, the studio was selected to integrate the official Portuguese Representation at the 16th Architecture Venice Biennale - Public Without Rethoric.

Diogo Aguiar (Porto, 1983) graduated from the University of Porto’s Faculty of Architecture in 2008. Before founding Diogo Aguiar Studio in 2016, he collaborated with several studios, including UNStudio, in Amsterdam, and co-founded former collective LIKEarchitects, in Porto (selected for Portugal’s representation in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014). Diogo Aguiar is also co-author of the Eco-Resort, in Pedras Salgadas, built in 2012, which has won the ArchDaily Building of the Year Award.

Diogo’s work has been widely published and he has won several awards in Portugal and abroad. Since 2017, Diogo is the commissioner of Concreta, the main Portuguese Architecture and Construction fair. He is also co-founder of the Architecture Gallery, in Porto. Most recently, Diogo was appointed co-curator of the Architecture Program of Bienal da Maia
