The new cemetery designed by the architecture studio Objektor architekti is integrated into the surrounding landscape, specifically into the nature of the Prague-Suchdol district, on the outskirts of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

The project takes as reference the surrounding landscape, both the crowns of the chestnut trees located in an old alley, the surrounding fields, the existing cemetery wall, the chapel of Saint Wenceslas, and the axis of the path that leads to the viewpoint of Goat ridges.

The project has been a finalist for the Czech Architecture Awards 2023.
The architects of Objektor architekti not only take as a reference to approach the project the integration with the landscape, but also the respect for the cemetery space and the views, which is solved with the transparency of the wall.

In addition, the growth that the cemetery may undergo in the future is taken into account, so it is configured using a grid of walls and paths that would allow the cemetery to be expanded with the same concept. In the same way, less defined spaces of vegetation are left in order to adapt the gardens with meadows and fields in the future.

At the entrance, a service booth is located for the cemetery guard, and the chapel of Saint Wenceslas is reconfigured to offer a spiritual refuge. In turn, the forest behind is suitable for alternative burial methods, such as scattering the ashes over the meadow or depositing them in the roots of trees.

Project description by Objektor architekti

The design of the new cemetery is based on existing qualities of the area – treetops of an elderly chestnut alley, horizons of surrounding fields, existing cemetery wall, chapel of St. Wenceslas, and axis of a trail leading to the rocky lookout towards Goat ridges.

We define the cemetery area through structures, principles, and materials; dividing the space by a grid of cemetery walls and paths enables the easy growth of the cemetery according to capacity needs in the future while maintaining the general concept. The landscape is regulated, yet leaving some areas less defined, aiming to integrate the cemetery gardens in the surrounding fields and meadows over time.

By the entrance, a utility house for the cemetery keeper is designed, incorporating public bathrooms as well. New parking spots are defined. The chapel of St. Wenceslas is reopened as a spiritual shelter for anyone seeking it. The grove behind the chapel is dedicated to alternative burial methods – placing the ashes by the roots of the trees or scattering them on the meadow.

Horizontality, destigmatization of the cemetery space, transparency of the cemetery wall, vistas, and integration in the landscape are the main themes defining this newly created public space.

Objektor is an architecture studio founded by Václav Šuba and Jakub Červenka in 2017 while they were studying at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design as a platform for cooperation in the field of architecture and its related topics. Since then they have been working on projects of various scales and typologies. The team now focuses on both small-scale objects and larger architectural commissions.

They listen carefully to their clients and become partners with whom they share their enthusiasm for the creative process. They look for themes that define the individual essence of each task and ways to push the boundaries in each project.

They cover all phases of the project process, from concept drafting, project submission for construction permit, preparation of detailed drawings to construction supervision. They also represent their clients during the process of applying for construction permits and other necessary documents.
