The work by Roy Nachum often features Braille poetry in relief and the subject of a child with a gold crown covering their eyes. Nachum, a multidisciplinary artist primarily known for his surreal and hyperrealist paintings, rose to fame with the cover he designed for Rihanna’s 2016 album Anti.
The beach is part of a total of 15 different rooms to explore, each one with the senses in an exhibition on Roy Nachum's work.
The concept
As a result of this meticulously prepared installation, the Robot symbiotically assumes the personality of the artist's alter ego, skillfully cycling through different types of human emotions expressed through immersion in a context of natural elements.
During the performance, the robot expresses different roles, acting and interacting in a human-like manner, inscribing messages in the sand and skillfully replicating natural actions that seemingly "clean up" the complex patterns written in the sand.
Creating the experience
To create the experience their team built a custom system to control and launch various KUKA programs throughout the 8-hour day performances.
They used TouchDesigner to create a playlist and robot control logic allowing them to input, swap, and launch KUKA programs outside of the KRC.
The artwork is currently on view at Mercer Labs in NYC.
