Vinos&Viandas is a wine cellar designed by the Spanish firm Zooco Estudio located in Valladolid, considerate as land of wine, in consequence of the several wine cellars we can find.

The main aim that they’re searching to achieve is to assemble the well-known world of the wine and it sales spaces by the circumference shape.

Zooco Estudio uses the circumferences as a reflection of all those forms that we can find in the cellars, present in the forms of wooden barrels, bottles and vaults. The combination generates the necessary spaces.

It’s understood as a space in the form of a rectangular prism in which two of the elevations are product exhibition through the conductive wire of the circumference. The material used also evoke us to the old underground cellars.

Project description by Zooco Estudio

The concept of this space comes from the searching of a well-known world which is the wine and its sales spaces. In our imaginary there are a lot of these references, thus, it is our attempt to abstract these images in a manner which the circumference shape arises.

The circumference shape is very noticeable in many ways, e.g. in the wooden barrels that can be visible inside the cellars, in the bottles, in the antique vaulted cellars. Therefore, the circumference introduces us into this world as the leitmotiv of the project.

The juxtaposition of several circumferences in transversal and longitudinal direction of the local creates a space where the required situations appear such as the counter, tasting table and exhibition-sale space.

This chain of curves originates a serie of arches of the space that linearly will be seen as vaults, a constructive system that evokes the ancient underground cellars.

Once the system is generated, we atomize it in its longitudinal direction dividing the system in vertical spaces of 15 cm, obtaining in this way two frontal elevations of product exhibition.

Therefore, the space is perceived as a sequence of wooden ribs in which the circumference shape is even more present.

Finally, to complete the space, it is necessary to mention the different materials. There are three materials in this project: wood is used for the ribs system as the barrels, stone for the floor as the antique cellars, and the mirror material which generates amplitude and an atmospheric world of reflections where those circumferences seem to contain some kind of liquid.

The project has been laurate with A’Design Platinum 2018 Award to the best interior space and the EuroShop RetailDesign 2018 Award.

Zooco Estudio is a young architectural firm founded in 2008 by Miguel Crespo Picot, Javier Guzmán Benito and Sixto Martín Martínez, with head offices in Madrid and Santander. Zooco Estudio´s philosophy is facing each project, from interior interventions to large structures building, through the same creative process.

Developing projects with different scales, they realize that architectural decisions are always the same: to create spaces that give response to needs and environment, always based on the generation of a clear concept as the base of the project.

This vision of architecture and the flexibility to adapt to different projects, has made them understand practice at a time of social and economic crisis.

Zooco Estudio tries to project with fine materials and simple shapes to achieve a timeless and functional aesthetic. They always search for neutral spaces and projects that last over the years. With this objective, they combine the research into new materials and systems, with the knowledge of traditional processes.

Throughout their professional career they have won different prizes and contests, among which the Civic Cultural Center of Soto de la Marina (Cantabria) and the Performing Arts Center in Verín (Galicia). They combine large-scale works with the creation and renovation of spaces in the contract, retail and residential sectors, highlighting projects such as the restaurant La Maruca, Orgaz and Atrapallada, or hotels such as Hotel Azul or Flamingo.
