On the contrary, the project is complex since the building is a monument declared BCIL (Bien Cultural de Interés Local) and its rehabilitation an ambitious process. The answer given by NUA arquitectures tries to dialogue with the existing city and sensitively recover the Roman memory of the city. A project that is hardly seen from afar and that is full of important and interesting nuances. Architecture that is not seen, however is recovered.
Description of project by NUA arquitectures
The site understood as an urban scenery of the memory where different temporary strata overlap and remind us every day that cities are living organisms in constant transformation.
The urban morphology of the old town of Tarragona has as a foundation the roman urban structure, which is still present and organizes inhabitants life’s.
The Plaça del Rei square arises as a result of a medieval transformation of the roman square Concilium Provinciae, an urban space that occupied the mid terrace of the Acropolis of the city. At the beginning of the 19th century, in a postwar context, was born in this multitemporal square the modern church of the Santíssima Trinitat, a baroque church reconstructed over the original building, that was destroyed by the general Suchet army before leaving the city, at the end of the French war.
For the restoration of the façades we propose an intervention that respect the current morphological structure of the monument, considering his austerity as a value, as a result of his circumstances along the history. The intervention is based on discover the different constructive layers and the most singular elements of the church. The project also wants to return the symbolic meaning to the façades discovering different elements and openings that were hidden.
In a second phase of intervention, it is proposed to incorporate in the restoration of the church the representation of the Themenos provincial roman forum pilasters rhythm on the facade wall of Santa Anna’s street, pretending with this pedagogical intervention of temporal superposition that the roman Tarraco square structure become more visible and understandable.

NUA arquitectures is a young practice based in Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) and founded in 2013 by Maria Rius, Arnau Tiñena and Ferran Tiñena that explores and works in areas related to architecture and design in different scales by sensitive strategies to the memory of places and the environment.
NUA has lectured at different institutions and schools of architecture as the Architects Association of Spain, the 2016 Archmarahton in Milano, and the Texas AM School of Architecture among other places. NUA's works have been recognized with awards as the Alejandro de la Sota Prize 2015, have been exhibited at the Venice international Biennial of Architecture 2016, and have been published worldwide in magazines such as Domus or Tectónica.
Maria, Arnau and Ferran, graduated with honors from the Barcelona School of Architecture, combine porfessional with academic and research activities and has also taught and served as juror at different institutions, including the Barcelona School of Architecture, the International University of Catalonia, La Salle School of Architecture and the Reus School of Architecture among others.
