The Allies and Morrison study brings a curious Christmas installation from one of its partners, Maria Spada.

The installation designed by Maria Spada from Allies and Morrison proposes converting internationally significant building plans into snowflakes. To select the buildings each member of the Allies and Morrison office has chosen an architectural building from their own country. This proposal has led to a curious and architectural Christmas decoration for the office.

"Maria Spada's Christmas installation for Allies and Morrison turns architectural plans into unique patterns for snowflakes"

Displayed in the entry foyer of Allies and Morrison Studios, in London, is an architectural take on the motif of the snowflake. It was created by Maria Spada, an architect at the practice, and fabricated by their Workshop.

The design takes plans from significant international examples of architecture to create unique patterns for snowflakes. 

Each one represents one of the nationalities represented in the practice. Nominations poured in from around the studio, from Bucky Fuller’s geodesic dome to Mies van der Rohe’s Friedrichstrasse skyscraper. 

The many responses received reflected our diverse family and their experience of architecture. Twenty are presented here.

Colorful smaller versions of the snowflakes were lasercut in order to collect money for charity.

Funds raised are destinated to Destiny Children's current project, the building of a dining shelter in Mombasa, Kenya. Allies and Morrison and Arup have designed this scheme as part of their pro-bono development work.

Maria Spada is graduated in architecture and urban planning from ETSA Madrid (2007-2015). She has collaborated with AZPML LIMITED between November 2015 and April 2016.

Allies and Morrison is an architecture and urban planning practice based in London. They operate from our own studios at 85 Southwark Street – the 2004 RIBA London Building of the Year.

They have completed projects throughout the UK and overseas, and are currently working on projects in the Middle East and in North America.

The work of the practice ranges from architecture, interior design and conservation to planning, consultation and research.

39 of their completed projects have won a RIBA Award and they have twice been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize – for the revitalisation of the Royal Festival Hall in 2008 and for New Court Rothschilds Bank in collaboration with OMA in 2012.

In 2015, they were awarded the AJ120 Practice of the Year.
