The 10th edition of the arquia/próxima Festival, organized by the Arquia Foundation, was held in Barcelona, where the winning projects by the most promising young architects on the current scene in Spain and Portugal were announced. The jury awarded an arquia/próxima prize and an arquia/innova prize.

The winners were chosen from a total of 743 projects. The proposals encompassed a diverse range of approaches, from built projects to research, urban interventions, ephemeral installations, performances, and audiovisual pieces.

The project awarded the arquia/próxima prize is:

"Ailarak. Museum of Landscape and Music" by BeAr, in Artea, Basque Country.

Furthermore, the jury awarded the arquia/innova prize to:

"Craquelures dans Le Réel" by KRI + KOIZ, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The first project was awarded a prize of 15,000€, while the second received 3,000€.

Additionally, honourable mentions were awarded to:

• "Forges Cultural Center" by FIRM Architects, in Lugo, Spain.
• "Anrobox prototype" by Tercia Arquitectos, in Tomelloso, Spain.
• "¡Qué Faena(r)!" by Oscar Cruz García and Pablo Paradinas Sastre, in Vigo, Spain.

The Arquia Foundation, through the action of the curator and the members of the jury, selected projects that stand out for their quality, at the level of project, execution, and originality. The two projects with the highest award, arquia/próxima and arquia/innova, were selected for their undeniable architectural quality and for demonstrating how collaboration between public administrations and young architects can lead to interventions with great social impact. In two different areas, such as and public space, the author teams skilfully manage to make the solutions proposed to current challenges attractive, focusing on people and their well-being through conscious design and careful materiality.

“The 10th edition of arquia/próxima has not merely been a showcase for projects. It has also served as a record of how the profession is evolving, of the concerns held by each generation, and of the questions that architecture needs to ask itself at any given time.”

Sol Candela

The edition was organised under the curatorship of José María Sánchez García, who defined the central theme, “TERRITORY”. It proposes a reflection on the transformations currently affecting architectural practice and its relationship with the environment, and invites a rethinking of this concept beyond its geographical dimension, incorporating cultural, ecological, social, and virtual aspects.

The jury, chaired by director Sol Candela, comprised Begoña de Abajo, Pablo Millán, María Fandiño, Carles Enrich, Branco Del-Rio and Lloc Arquitectes. Reflecting on the submissions, its members remarked: “It is truly inspiring to encounter such a large number of projects, all from the emerging segment of the profession. Not only are there works of unquestionable quality, but we also see practices—despite their short track records—exploring new languages that introduce the innovation and motivation so essential to any creative field. Furthermore, it is heartening to observe that these individuals have clearly internalized the most pressing economic, ecological, and social concerns of our time, offering solutions with a natural ease and freshness that reveal a well-developed, mature way of thinking.”

The arquia/próxima program, launched in 2006, has established itself as one of the key programs of the Arquia Foundation to support emerging talent in the field of architecture. Since its creation in 1990 by the Caja de Arquitectos (now Arquia Banca), the Foundation, currently directed by Sol Candela, continues to support the dissemination of innovative projects in architecture, construction, design and urban planning.

The festival has been held in different cities throughout Spain, with slogans that have a lot to do with the situation of the new generations at that time:, 'New Formats' 2012 A Coruña, 'Out' 2014 Granada, 'Imperfect Future' 2016 Malaga, 'Relevant practices' 2018 Madrid, 'Inflection point' 2020 virtual (Barcelona), 'Resilience. A dynamic balance' Valencia and in 2024 it returned to Madrid with 'Desire'.
