Yesterday published the emerging Voices 2014. The Architectural League of New York each year selects eight emerging practitioners through a juried, invited portfolio competition. The Emerging Voices award spotlights individuals and firms based in the United States, Canada, or Mexico with distinct design voices and the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism.
The Living. Amphibious Architecture, commissioned by the Architectural League of New York and developed in collaboration with Natalie Jeremijenko, is a network of floating tubes that sense water quality, fish, and human interest—then blink and change color. The work of each Emerging Voice represents the best of its kind, and addresses larger issues within architecture, landscape, and the built environment. Emerging Voice is one of the most notable awards in North American architecture. For a complete list of past winners, thirty-year history, click here.
This year’s jury included Fred Bernstein, Paul Lewis, Kate Orff, Thomas Phifer, Annabelle Selldorf, and Adam Yarinsky. Emerging Voices is organized by League Program Director Anne Rieselbach.
The eight winners will each lecture in New York, at the Scholastic Auditorium in Soho, in March. For more information on those lectures, click here. Tickets are required. The League will present digital features on each of the eight firms, exploring their work and design “voice” through interviews, video, and documentation of their work, available in April.
Founded in 2006 with “the mission of creating the architecture of the future,” The Living, led by principal David Benjamin, explores “how new technologies come to life in the built environment.”
Geoff di Girolamo, James Lord, and Roderick Wyllie, principals of the San Francisco landscape architecture and urban design practice, Surface Design Inc., focus on creating landscapes that “connect people to their built environment” with an emphasis on “personal histories and connections between culture and natural environment.”
SITU Studio, founded by Basar Girit, Aleksey Lukyanov-Cherny, Wes Rozen, and Bradley Samuels in 2005, is committed “to interrogating design ideas through physical and material experimentation at a wide range of scales.” The firm’s Brooklyn-based studio, divided between design and fabrication spaces, enables their goal to “leverage fabrication efficiencies, material re-use, flexible assemblies, and community involvement to create spaces that engage in living relationships with the urban context….”
Founded in 2004, Joyce Hwang’s Buffalo-based firm Ants of the Prairie, is an arts and research practice “dedicated to developing creative approaches in confronting the pleasures and horrors of our contemporary ecologies.”
Founded in 2012 by Salvador Macías Corona and Magui Peredo Arenas, the Guadalajara-based Estudio Macías Peredo focuses on design and construction, as well as the spreading of architectural culture.
The Oakland firm Rael San Fratello, founded in 2002 by Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, shies away from working within a set philosophy, trying rather “not to define, but rather to constantly redefine ourselves.”

Mauricio Rocha Iturbide and Gabriela Carrillo Valadez, founding principals of Mexico City based TALLER |MauricioRocha+GabrielaCarrillo|, focus on “the importance of the vernacular, craftsmanship, sustainability, and socially-responsible design.” It is through the “manipulation of proportion, volume, light, and material,” that the firm investigates and creates its architecture.
“Context, materials research, economies of construction, building performance, and client-based collaboration” all shape the design approach of Williamson Chong Architects. The Toronto-based practice was founded by Shane Williamson and Betsy Williamson in 2000; Donald Chong joined the firm in 2011.
