We discover the creative process of a competition presented internationally, involving architects of different nationalities. Francisco Peláez is the responsible of telling it us, as a part of an architecture office in Amsterdam, for a new episode of the second season of In Treatment [>2] - METALOCUS. jrs.

It was a hot June 15, 2010, a group of young architects from different nationalities and a contest to be clarified: "Competition for the Museum of World War II in Gdansk (Poland)". The illusion, desire and competitiveness took over each of us making the process of lubricating working machinery. During the early days we read and reread the bases, study, analyze and raise that city's environment and history of mostly industrial character. A triangular plot of thousands of square meters, obsolete bordered on one side with one of the rivers that surround the city.

There was an initial "brainstorming" where everyone timidly exposed, including red-faced, what he suggested that in some respect. This project demonstrates fully the work strategies of Dutch architecture. The building shaped born genesis of a complex, whose faces were perpendicular to the ground plane, the angles were completely dislocated. This architectural object wanting to lie structurally bandaging with two types of guidelines or different recurring axes parallel, intersecting these bands generating diamond lattice. Different distances between such bandages certain distortions created in the size of the object causing a juxtaposed set of perspectives. This process of project based on three-dimensional structural mesh generation complex, was very characteristic of all IBA study projects.

A few studying the prototype from the structural viewpoint, using for it, a bandage system based on a series of rubber bands of different colors. Another group of people devoted to investigate possible synergies between the different parts of the program using it quite interesting working models.

In a second "brainstorming", after several deliberations, the idea simple yet radical bound Sewing and controlled the entire program area. Three huge structural trays, four meters high and linked by escalators, housed uses more technical hooked up while structurally the whole building. In this way the rest of the space freed, using a lot of air volume for the themes as the museum exhibition. The last tray that crowned the building in its upper part is broken and joined up visually blurs the showrooms. The entire program located in the covered tray brings more lucrative uses, discriminating a bit in that sense but getting more functionality.

The architectural object ends up becoming soft in its vertices and edges as a big gummy bright white, contrasting with diamond scratched skin envelope that leads to pain and suffering that marked the moment in history.

One hot August 8, 2011, all persons who were involved in that project sat on one of the piers of wooden boards that connected the study, ventured into the river, with the earth. As a big barbecue, offering wines we drank elated by what we had planned ... the result of the competition is something that will never be in our hands.
