Nogueiras House is inserted inside an previously existing building with massive stone walls in the portuguese town of Viana do Castelo. The restoration of the dwelling seeks to create a livable interior space using a timber element that serves as furniture while it delimitates the rooms of the house.

The interior distribution of the house is divided into two levels:The ground floor houses the most public uses of the house: living room, kitchen, etc. The first floor is occupied by a small room. One of the most relevant characteristics of this project, envisioned by par-do architecture, is the insertion of a large piece of furniture in the center of the house which separates the different areas, in addition to functioning as a service element (cupboard, toilet, chest of drawers, stairs ...). The intervention, developed in timber, creates a bright and spacious interior atmosphere despite the small size of the house, thanks to the assimilation of functions solved by the furniture element and the clear colors of the inner walls.
Description of the project by par-do
Nogueiras House occupies an existing stone construction in direct relation with the front patioandwith views to the sea.Formerlyused as a barn, it has now been converted into a house. Tothe West, the stone facade andwall limit the plot with the public roadand to the East the main entrance of the house is made under a vineyard.
The project has started with the perimeter pre-existing walls, to which were added the first floor and the multifunctional box detached from the internal walls and in relation with all the areas. The program is developed in two floors, with the more public areas located in the ground level, with double height in the living area and entrance, and the more private ones in the first floor. The central wood box is the bounding piece of the different areas, incorporating several usages and furniture elements such as: pantry and cupboard in the cooking and dining area, shelf in the living area, bathroom inside it, support to the stair, mezzanine on the top and dresser in the bedroom.
Due to the small size of the house, the secondary areas were condensed, making the main areas more open and in relation with each other, giving to the internal space a more versatile use and a clearer circulation and occupation.
The wood is the structural material, with which the first floor, the box and the wall that delimits the sleeping area were built. Through an articulated blade system, it is possible to open or close the sleeping area and also to play with the permeability created with the different blade positions. The finishes are birch plywood, lacquered or painted in white, and the ground floor is in polished concrete. The chosen materials emphasize the luminosity and the neutral ambience of the open areas designed in the project.

Sofia Morais Parente, André Delgado par-do
par-do is an architecture office founded by Sofia Morais Parente and André Delgado in 2014. Architects by Escola de Arquitectura da Universidade do Minho, Guimarães (2003-2008), Sofia has also studied at Università degli Studi di Ferrara, Italy and André at ZHAW, Switzerland.
Between 2009 and 2014, they collaborated in the Centro de Estudos da Escola de Arquitectura da Universidade do Minho, working in different projects such as, ‘Urban Rehabilitation of Praça do Toural, Alameda de São Dâmaso and Rua de Santo António’, within the European Capital of Culture Guimarães 2012; ‘Rehabilitation of Baluarte de Santo António - Interpretation Centre of Cité Portugaise Mazagão’, El Jadida, Morocco; intervention at Museu Nogueira da Silva, Braga; design and assemble of the exhibition ‘Missão Fotográfica: Paisagem Transgénica’, Guimarães 2012.
In 2013 they won the first price of the competition “Fazer acontecer a Regeneração Urbana”, a project for an area in the historical centre of Viana do Castelo.
