The Italians are still Italians. It´s much more that the Spanish can tell. They keep having their culinary habits where the foreigner food as very few space, they keep enjoying the “dolce farniente” and some work habits look like the pre globalization era, if not before. Because of this, it´s kind of odd that wherever you go in the world there are signs of the Italian culture, due to their ability to export their products with great success and to import just the very necessary, however not all the world culture is present in Italy, as an example let´s say that there are no Starbucks. All this has its dark and bright side, but the bright side is that many of the habits and way of life remain untouched as many monuments in Rome do.
Coliseum. Rome. Italy.
Precisely, the Romans were who started to work with all parametric things that I work with now. Yes, yes. The Romans. What we have done now it´s to put all this knowledge in a box that calculates for us. But it was in Rome, where Vitruvio published in around 30 BC, De Architectura, and the Romans who put in practice the ten books of architecture, starting like this the world of the parametric architecture, that it seems so new to us now at days.
As Bernard Cache says, the very first parametric architecture were not building, they were machines: a sundial, a catapult, etc., but what it has arrived to us are not moving objects but statics: the Colosseum. It has remained so static during the last two thousand years that here in Italy seems not to care much about it. This is why, the “friendly” Berlusconi has decided to privatize it to a related company, of course, that will take better care of it. Taking worse care of it, it`s hardly difficult anyway.
But going back to the parametric issue, in the Colosseum facade we can see perfectly the parametric relationship between the arcs, depending on the height of the building.
The associative design started here, between stones and vigorous materials, but it developed its way out centuries later in other places between computers and intelligent materials.
