SahuquillodeArriba conceives a large sculptural bookcase made of burgundy-stained ash wood that runs through and embraces Chiquita, extending its colour into the bathroom. Opposite this piece, its antithesis: a streamlined built-in bench accompanied by marble tables, in dialogue with the materiality of the counter. At the end of the journey, a large table accommodates a variety of activities, transforming the space into a cultural catalyst.
This carefully considered juxtaposition of materials celebrates the beauty of imperfection through a visual and tactile interplay: the warmth of the bookcase contrasts with a rugged, rocky ceiling in a soft shade of blue and the restored original walls, whose presence preserves the building’s living memory. Together, these elements create an intimate, domestic atmosphere, where the warm light emanating from the bookcase combines with delicate wall sconces and lamps.

Chiquita, caffee, books and wine: a visual journey to slow down
Located in Valencia, in the heart of El Botànic neighbourhood, Chiquita arose from the need to create a space for respite in the middle of the city. In a society characterised by immediacy and speed, the result is a haven that embraces culture and community gatherings, inviting people to slow down from the pace of modern life. Behind this project is Gloria Izquierdo, a product designer. Her aim with this business is to foster a sense of community and offer a carefully curated selection of books, wine and speciality coffee. All of this comes together in a project defined by its unique character.
The space is structured around a clean floor plan where contrasting textures and geometries coexist in a dialogue of contrast. On one side stands a large ash wood bookcase, stained in a burgundy hue, which runs the length of the premises and embraces the space. This almost sculptural piece envelops the visitor and flows, using colour to extend into the bathroom. Opposite this piece stands its antithesis: a neat, continuous bench, accompanied by small white marble tables that engage directly with the materiality of the bar. This contrasting arrangement gives the bookcase centre stage, inviting visitors to lose themselves in it.
The design is enriched by the careful juxtaposition of materials. The warmth and perfection of the ash wood shelving stand in stark contrast to a rugged, rocky ceiling. This upper element has been finished in a soft blue shade, creating a visual and tactile interplay that defines the atmosphere of the space. The walls also embrace the beauty of imperfection; during the renovation, the original wall was restored by applying only a thin, breathable coat that prevents damp and respects the building’s living history.
The colour scheme is no accident; it serves as a tool for organising the space. At the end of the route, a large table awaits, strategically positioned to host book clubs, meetings and activities, transforming the space into a true cultural catalyst. The lighting enhances this intimate, homely atmosphere, combining the warm light emanating from the bookshelves themselves with delicate wall lights and small table lamps.
Chiquita is all about taking your time, connection and texture; a work where design, reading and community come together.
