ATMOSPHERE Architects has designed a HUG boutique, in Chengdu, China, for fashion designer Uma Wang, one of China's foremost costume creatives, whose most recent collection, SS20, is inspired by the evocative city of Pompeii destroyed by an eruption of the Vesuvius who froze the lives of Pompeians for eternity.

The design aims to metaphorically recover the roots of that thriving Roman city. Through a solemn and concise, primitive and mysterious proposal, Tommy Yu, chief designer of ATMOSPHERE Architects, creates two differentiated spaces on the two floors of this boutique.
On the lower floor, ATMOSPHERE Architect designs an exhibition room for the new season outfits, a small hall and the access staircase to the first floor, referencing the daily history of that time through an annular organization accentuated by a ring of bricks on the floor, accompanied by ocher materials, wooden elements, the changing rooms under the curtains and the red tone that recalls the volcanic eruption. The upper light enters the room from above and falls on the green plants in the middle of the floor, as a metaphor for the arrival of hope after the ruins.

On the top floor, equally conceptual, the sensations change completely. A space totally flooded with lights and reflections, with surfaces in chrome and silver tones creating a much more lively environment. With fluorescent colours and metallic materials, the image of fallen ashes is shown, on which the life to come is generated.

Description of project by ATMOSPHERE Architects

Retrace
The space is slightly square, surrounded by walls, with gates on all sides, running through the city in a chessboard-like arrangement. This is Pompeii.

Which was destroyed by Vesuvius, and became eternal for the same reason.

If Pompeii is the deconstruction and restoration of history through design, by UMA WANG, this space tries to trace this lost civilization through all the materials.

It is a tribute, but also a rebirth after looking back on history.

Metaphor
Solemn and concise, primitive and mysterious. The sense of history under the ash after 2000 years is conveyed through the circular distribution of the bricks of the floor, the materials of the interior, and the wooden elements of the space.

In this solemnity, the overhead light penetrates the room from above and falls on the green plants in the centre of the floor, as a metaphor for the arrival of hope after the ruins.

Churches, shrines, and the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the ancient civilization of two thousand years ago are recreated here in a concise and restrained combination.

Rebirth
The Pompeii series features Uma's rare fluorescent colours to recapture the glow of fallen ash and symbolize new life.

The concept of space is also reflected in the presentation. In the overall simplicity of the environment, through the circular space in the background, in the fitting room, and under the shade of a curtain, the colour red can be seen. Like the eruption of a volcano with a red hot moment. This call should be the metaphor of UMA in the series, and the collision of colours also brings more layers to the space.

As you climb the rungs of the rotating ladder, the light goes from dark to bright, and the space changes accordingly.

Epiphany
In contrast to the primitive and mysterious atmosphere of the first floor, on the steps, the space dominated by silver and white tones suddenly opens up the limit of vision.

The concept of time and space here has a more multidimensional expression, where the senses collide and intersect, giving the space a unique language system.

The stainless steel rail display frame, circular and linear, is a moving visual line that connects the entire space in an orderly fashion.

Pioneering
Since hug's inception, its mission has been to select the works of independent designers from around the world and to integrate different quality design brands, including hug's own Merci Beauty.

The application of curved surface elements somewhat neutralized the coldness brought by the brand's silver and blue colours, hug intertwined with it, showing a sense of futurism and pioneering, anguish and neutrality, inclusiveness and storage.

Not only the modern sense of Western pop culture but also the contemporary awareness of the East.

The use of a ceiling of lamps without shades fades the noise belonging to the outside world as much as possible so that the space focuses on the clothes themselves, which greatly expands the cycle of use of the space.
