Belgian architecture practice, B-bis architecten, was commissioned to design the VDP House, a single-family home located in Schoten, a municipality in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. Located in the green environment that characterizes the area, the project transforms an original family residence from 1976 into an efficient and renovated contemporary home.

The design tries to transform the home through a series of actions, improving the natural lighting inside so that its inhabitants can carry out their daily activities in spaces that have better living conditions.
The home renovated by B-bis architecten, in addition to improving connectivity between different parts of the home, stands out mainly for the notable lighting improvements in different key spaces inside, introducing new openings or openings in the pre-existing building when necessary. glass structures, as well as a new compact glass extension that serves as an extension to the kitchen.

In the project, using only renewable resources, the housing resources were renovated, rebuilding the kitchen and bathrooms, seeking to adapt to a new contemporary era. Elements such as windows, carpentry or floors were replaced, and in the case of the floor, it was insulated and equipped with underfloor heating.

Description of project by B-bis architecten

In the green surroundings of Antwerp, we transformed a 1976 family residence by architect A.H. Sleyp, which was included in Schoten's heritage list, into a contemporary, future-proof home.

A number of key spaces received major upgrades. First, we brought more light into the dining area through a new glass structure that breaks through the sloping roof. The breakfast nook received an additional round window and a better connection to the rest of the home, while we opened up the kitchen with a new, compact glass extension. Finally, we lowered the floor in the central axis and in the kitchen to better connect the different living spaces.

All techniques were redone using only renewable resources. The floors were renewed, insulated and equipped with underfloor heating. The windows were replaced and also the kitchen, bathrooms and all interior carpentry were rebuild.

Without breaking the soul of the house, all obstructions were removed and we were able to return to the essence: light, love and connection.

B-architecten, B-bis, B-city, B-juxta. Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten was born. The three had met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. At the internationally oriented Berlage Institute, it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office is located in Antwerp and Brussels.

Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, they started a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten became an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design.

In 2020, B-city was launched as a third B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts.

Today, B is the sum of four studio divisions called B-architecten, B-bis, B-city and B-juxta have naturally grown into an office of more than 60 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.
