The building on which the architecture studio B-architecten has intervened, located a few minutes from the historic center of Antwerp, Belgium, has been included since 2019 in the Inventory of heritage properties; however, it is not protected.
The original building, from the 1950s, has elements of heritage value such as the concrete structure, the atrium, the glass roof and the granite staircase. It was restored in 1990, but part of the elements that were included in this intervention have been removed to recover the original essence of the building.

The new program, developed by B-architecten, includes a library, workrooms, meeting area, a cafeteria, and various rooms such as an auditorium and language and interpretation rehearsal classrooms, among others, in order to develop a new study center for the Faculties of Arts and Economics and Business Administration at KU Leuven.
The two facades have been restored, and the forging located on the first level, which was introduced in the 1990 intervention, has been removed to reopen the original atrium that ran from the first floor to the third floor. In addition, the original staircase between the ground and first floors, which was demolished in 1990, has been rebuilt. In this way, the program has been organized to restore the monumental character of the building, placing the library on the walkways that run through the three floors and the meeting area, both for events and for student rest, on the ground floor.

Description of project by B-architecten
The building was transformed into a new innovative learning environment for KU Leuven students (Faculties of Arts and Economics and Business Administration). It now houses a library with silent workplaces and group workrooms, a meeting area with a cafeteria and a number of classrooms: an auditorium, state of the art language and interpreting labs, a quiet room, and so on.
The building has been included in the Immovable Heritage Inventory since 2019, but despite its high heritage value, it is not protected. However, it does have a high conservation value due to a number of unique elements such as the concrete structure, the atrium, the glass-roofed ceiling above the atrium and the monumental granite stacked staircase. The interior spaces were restored with respect for these authentic elements.

The existing building formed the ideal framework for a contemporary learning platform - especially its original fifties design. The original grandeur was restored, along with a few valuable interventions - including conforming it to current legislation on accessibility and fire safety. The main entrance was retained on Jezusstraat, with a limited (pop-up) hospitality area to the side.
The main building is located in the middle of the building block and was originally a beautiful atrium, spreading from the ground to the third floor. In 1990, it was rebuilt and the opening between the ground and the first floor was closed with a new floor plate. We removed this again, restoring the building to its original glory.
The original protruding staircase between the ground and the first floor was demolished in the 1990 renovation. We reintroduced it into the new concept, so that its monumental character came into its own again and a more logical primary circulation was created in the atrium, connecting all floors.

The spacious passerelles, spread over three levels in the atrium, were mainly filled in with an open library. The central ground floor level now is a welcoming encounter area where students can have lunch, talk, pause and interact with one another. It has a multifunctional character and can be used for events, lectures etc.
The high, open existing spaces in the volume on Kipdorpvest were preserved as much as possible and restored to their original state. They form the ideal context to create valuable, pleasant teaching and study spaces.
As indicated, the building was largely preserved or returned to its original state. This also applies to the two façades on Jezusstraat and Kipdorpvest, which were largely restored.

B-architecten, B-bis, B-city, B-juxta. Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten was born. The three had met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. At the internationally oriented Berlage Institute, it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office is located in Antwerp and Brussels.
Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, they started a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten became an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design.
In 2020, B-city was launched as a third B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts.
Today, B is the sum of four studio divisions called B-architecten, B-bis, B-city and B-juxta have naturally grown into an office of more than 60 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.
