This is a song by the american rock band The Killers, from their sixth studio album, Imploding the Mirage, released in 2020. It was released on June 17, 2020 as the third single from the album, and consists of a lyrical introspection that addresses the struggle between following or going against intuition, whether or not to heed the warnings of the soul.

The Killers are known for combining elements of alternative rock with post-punk and new wave influences. In this song, the group reflects how over the years they have been perfecting the way of fusing these styles with deep and thoughtful lyrics.
Through this song, The Killers seeks to explore the idea of the persistence of memory and mourning. They talk about how no matter how much you try to escape your memories or feelings, they remain intrinsically linked to you. Furthermore, and as is characteristic of their albums, following a narrative, the group tells the story of characters who, despite their mistakes and the difficulties inherent to a failed relationship, retain the desire to return to an initial state that feels like a home.

The group's main vocalist, Brandon Flowers, says that he found it very interesting but strange to write a song about regret since it is not a very recurring theme in rock. In this way, what he intended was to write something meaningful that would transcend and resonate with people, whether in a stadium or through headphones. He wanted, he says as a composer, to make a song for himself.

Lyrics.-
I tried going against my own soul’s warning
But in the end, something just didn’t feel right
Oh I tried diving even though the sky was storming
And I just wanted to get back to where you are

If you could see through the banner of the sun
Into eternity’s eyes
Like a vision reaching down to you
Would you turn away?
What if it knew you by your name?
What kind of words would cut
Through the clutter of the whirlwinds of these days?

I tried going against my own soul’s warning
But in the end, something just didn’t feel right
Oh I tried diving, even though the sky was storming
Thunderheads were forming
But man I thought I could fly
And when I hit the ground

It made a messed up sound
And it kept on rattling through my days
And cutting up my nights
Like a goddamned knife
And it got me thinking, no matter how far
I just wanted to get back to where you are

I tried going against my own soul’s warning
But in the end, something just didn’t feel right
Oh I tried running from the memory and the mourning
But the penalty kept on pouring

And now I think I know why
Cause when I hit the ground
It made a messed up sound
And it kept on rattling through my days
And cutting up my nights
Like a goddamned knife
And it got me thinking, no matter how far
I just wanted to get back to where you are.
