The engineering and architecture company Milan Ingegneria has projected the reconstruction of the arena of the Roman Colosseum, located in Rome, the capital of the Roman Empire, its construction began in 72 AD and ended in 80 AD, under the mandate of the emperor Tito, was the largest and most relevant amphitheatre of those built at this stage.

The amphitheatres were spaces in which shows and games were represented, such as gladiatorial fighting, animals or races, the central area, where the representations were made, was covered with sand.

At first, the Roman Colosseum had a wooden floor in the central area covered with sand, under it was a series of tunnels where gladiators and animals prepared before the shows. The floor of the Roman Amphitheater was removed at the end of the 19th century, as archaeological excavations of the underground levels of the amphitheatre began.
Milan Ingegneria has projected a new system for the Colosseum to recover its arena. It all started with the competition for the design and construction of the Colosseum by Coliseo Park and Invitalia, a call from the Italian engineering and architecture company was victorious.

The idea of recovering the arena of the Colosseum has been on the table since 2014, when the Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini took up the idea of the archaeologist Daniele Manacorda, later, in 2015, the Colosseum began to be part of the Great Projects of Cultural Heritage, with a loan of just over 18 million euros, from that moment until 2020 the Culture Ministry the different project options have been considered, which is why the idea of the contest was launched.

«It is an extraordinary project that has been talked about all over the world I think it is a set of intelligent preservation of technological innovation. The arena can be opened, you can see the subways or you can walk standing in the centre of the colosseum, Selling the colosseum as all travellers saw it until the late 19th century. There may be orders from the centre to allow it to be used for some cultural events of the highest international quality.»
Dario Franceschini

Milan Ingegneria's project seeks a new setting for the amphitheatre that is light, and at the same time allows the visitor to enjoy the majesty of the monument. It achieves this by designing a high-tech carbon prosthesis system with a cladding of sustainably obtained Accoya wood panels, the latter undergoing a series of processes to increase its strength and durability.

The retractable floor system will allow the opening of the floor structure, thus ensuring natural lighting and ventilation. The system will be composed of 24 mechanical ventilation units distributed throughout the perimeter, the latter will regulate the temperature, humidity and light, in addition, it will have an interior system that will store rainwater that will later be used for the public bathrooms of the monument. The new project will allow the Colosseum to recover its image while presenting a new multipurpose space and protecting the underground structures of the Colosseum.
