The Czech studio ADR has designed a new brewery for Hostivar H2 on the outskirts of Prague, twinned with another nearby brewery run by the same studio in 2013, the Hostivar Brewery 1.

In addition to the productive spaces, dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of beer, the building has a bar/restaurant area and a bakery.
ADR, led by the local Petr Kolář and Aleš Lapka, has become a specialist in these typologies and with this factory continues a journey that has antecedents in works such as the distillery and micro-brewery in the city of Most or the Javornice distillery, both in the Czech Republic.

The simplicity of the volume that contains the brewery, as well as its scale, responds in part to the conditions of the location in which it is implanted. An almost borderline situation, outside the residential suburbs of Prague and delimited by a wide traffic lane to the south and a train track to the northeast. This condition is one of the key elements for the studio when it comes to placing the building, which ends up opening almost completely to the only orientation with some visual interest, from where to see the green of the adjacent golf course.

Description of project by ADR

The brewery is located at the periphery of a Prague residential area with a view of the adjacent golf course. It is in direct pedestrian relation to the railway station Praha – Horní Měcholupy. The Hostivar Brewery H2 is the younger brother of Hostivar Brewery 1 that lays about 1 km away.

The shape of the floor plan is influenced by the uneven shape of the parcel. The brewery’s facade had wooden cladding, replaced with black profiled sheet metal cladding. In key moments the facade is glass, opening the view into the restaurant or the brew house. The restaurant terrace is oriented into the garden where in summer we can find a small taproom and outdoor garden seating for the guests.

On the ground floor, there is most of the brewery’s operations. Directly linked with it is the placement of the restaurant and its gastronomy processes. The restaurant entrance is from a lobby, embedded into the mass of the building. The restaurant’s interior consists of two floors. The bar with silver profiled sheet metal cladding and stove fire place dominate the ground floor. Access to the gallery on the second floor is by a steel spiral staircase. A distinctive element of the interior is the dark wooden cladding that runs through both floors. In contrast to which there is the white perforated plasterboard surface of the walls that helps with the acoustics of the space. The restaurant is directly connected with the heated terrace which is partially glass, with areas that can be separated from the exterior by a plastic roller blind.

On the second floor there is the mass production bakery, administrative spaces and space for the brewery.

ADR is an architectural studio established by Aleš Lapka and Petr Kolář in 1996.

The founders started cooperating in 1992, during their studies at UMPRUM – the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Today, the studio focuses on both construction and reconstruction projects. They also work on interior design projects, closely cooperating with visual artists. The ADR studio designs projects both in Czechia and abroad.

In their more than twenty-five years of experience, the architects have crafted their own style, which articulates the creative work of more than forty members of their team. In recent years, their work has also been awarded multiple prestigious awards. In 2014, the studio won the main prize in the interior category in the Grand Prix of Architects – this was with their project working on a network of Megapixel showrooms. In 2014, the studio's project Private Island of Velaa, in the Maldives, received a prize from the International Hotel Awards, and in 2015, it was awarded by the Luxury Travel Guide Awards.

In 2017, the Javornická distillery – another project by the studio, was awarded by the citizen's association Klub za Starou Prahu (the Club for Old Prague), whose objective is the preservation of historical buildings. In 2018, the ADR were victorious in a competition for the best national Olympic house in PyeongChang. In the same year, their Trautenberk Brewery project was awarded by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic. It was hailed as an excellent example of a building reconstruction that respected the character of the landscape. In the industrial design category, the studio won the Red Dot Award in 2003 and 2010. In 2019, the Czech Olympic Committee awarded the studio for their outstanding contribution to sport and the Olympic movement.
