Digital artist Efrén Mur presents the interactive audiovisual installation “It from bit” at Matadero Madrid, a contemporary creation centre of the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport.

It from bit is made up of five works by the Madrid-born artist based in Berlin, together with an interactive installation with motion sensors that capture and measure the flows of circulation and observation of the visitors.

In the exhibition, visitors will be able to explore new realities thanks to performative technology that combines creativity, software programming and hardware design. The proposal examines the complexity of sensory flows in space-time, and points out how human perception and consciousness directly influence the experience and understanding of reality.

Through various formats, Efrén Mur proposes different dialogues between humans and technologies, exploring new sensory spectrums. In this large-scale installation, the subjective perception of the visitor is confronted with immersive art models that allow the exploration of new realities.

Through a dialogue between technology and five different works by the artist, the installation seeks to make visible a global context and reality about what happens in the space and time where we find ourselves, above the context of each of the works.

The power of the collective over the individual
It from bit is made up of five works by the Madrid artist distributed in the space, and an interactive installation based on a series of motion sensors intended to capture and measure the flows of circulation and observation of the attendees. As a result of this collection of measurable data, it is possible to make visible a global context and reality about what happens in the space and time where we find ourselves, above the micro reality of each of the works.

Art and technology encase a mutable dialogue in It from bit. Using both disciplines in the same context not only creates a connecting bridge between what is perceptible and what is not, but also turns all this information into a new central work, which bears the same name as the exhibition: It from bit.

Theoretical framework of It from bit: observation as a transforming agent
Theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler used the term "participant" to emphasize the idea that observers do not exercise a passive activity in the universe, but rather play an active role in the formation of reality through the act of observation itself. An idea directly related to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, suggesting that human consciousness can influence physical reality.

Concepts from sociology and philosophy such as "interdependence" or "collective consciousness" are crucial to understanding how individuals relate to each other and how societies work in a context of cooperation. Although binding relationships can be a conservative force that maintains the status quo, they also raise the potential to become a dynamic force that keeps relationships together, the only way to drive social change.

Psychology also recognizes that the observer's perception influences their experience of reality; and not only that, but through It from bit, this impact can be made visible. Human beings interpret the world through their senses and cognitive processes, which means that two people can perceive the same situation differently due to their individual experiences, expectations and contexts.

The work developed by Efrén Mur has been exhibited in places such as Times Square New York, MSG Sphere Las Vegas, Toronto History Museum, Art Dubai or LACMA Los Angeles, among others.

Efrén Mur (1978, Madrid) is a digital artist and art director with more than two decades of uninterrupted career in the audiovisual and digital arts world. Based in Berlin since 2017, he explores visual creation through the use of new technologies, generating perceptive dialogues in which image, color, movement and sound become essential compositional elements and end up acquiring their maximum aesthetic and expressive value.

With training in cinema and digital post-production, Efrén Mur uses technology as a means of expression and converts his creative discourse into audiovisual works that explore different formats and digital media, such as installations, live shows and even NFT works, which transform digital files into unique pieces of art.

The close relationship of his work with music and the senses has led the artist to take part in cultural programs and exhibitions at numerous events, such as MUTEK Argentina, Kharkhorum Festival Mongolia or FIB International Festival of Benicassim, and to collaborate with artists from various disciplines. His works have been exhibited in places such as Times Square in New York, MSG Sphere in Las Vegas, Toronto History Museum and Art Dubai, LACMA in Los Angeles, among others.
