In an colour exercise, architecture studio BCQ of Barcelona, brings joy to this colorful neighborhood of Badalona. A project that integrates housing and public space and that aims to turn the large rubber mat of its square into a extension of the own facade.

Memory of project.

Prior to the intervention this was an urban void, simply an unfinished piece of city; a junction of streets in V-shaped in an urban surrounding inhabited mostly by workers from Andalucía and Extremadura. Even though the residential buildings in this neighborhood present a very modest architecture, they sometimes have colorful façades.

From the original situation it seemed important for us to preserve the joy and the color of the facades of the neighborhood and take the opportunity to remodel a small urban space next to the new building through the resource which the residents of the neighborhood have always used: the color.

One of the main challenges of the project was the integration between the façade and the public space. The building is conceived as a large facade of the same color as the pavement of the square. Thus, the facade becomes a vertical extension of the square, whilst the square becomes a horizontal extension of the facade.

At the same time, the project intends to provide the space for a new use, hence the flexible pavement and the large commercial premise on the ground floor of the new building.

Vehicles are replaced by trees, children's playground and a bar with a terrace area. Tree grids are metallic and round; the windows of the building are also metallic but square. All the other elements, the ground floor and banks, are in dark color.

BCQ architecture Barcelona, with 20 years of professional experience, David Baena and Toni Casamor developed the projects of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design at all scales and dimensions in the atelier BCQ arquitecture Barcelona as a result of the combination of aspects such as design quality, functionality and technical feasibility in creative design.

Whether it involves an urban scale project, an intervention in landscape or a building construction, they seek the best possible answer to improve their built, landscape and social environment from and towards sustainability.

In 2006 Manel Peribáñez and Maria Taltavull joined as partners. Since then they have combined their design works and construction projects with education at the main architectural schools both in Catalonia and abroad, such as the School of Architecture in Zurich (ETH) and the Faculty of Architecture in Alghero, Sardinia. The projects of BCQ have been widely published and presented at the conferences both nationally and internationally. In 2008 BCQ published the monograph Reflections | Reflections and the recent works were published in the special issue of TC CUADERNOS nº 105 BCQ BAENA CASAMOR in 2012.
