With this premise, the proposal was thought of as an intrusion, proposing a 45º turn on the main lines of the building, which configures a new place with new uses and appropriations, as the architects comment, a scenario where nothing is what it seems: "an intervention like that of an actor who speaks in other different terms, which is not governed, at least in a significant percentage, by the same laws that governed the very conception of the building."
Description of project by Garmendia Cordero Arquitectos
Intervening in a consolidated and delimited space always is partly an ephemeral performance that reminds us of the task of creating a set inside a theater.
If we understand this type of action as something transitory inside a volume that will last much longer than that action itself, it makes sense to propose an intervention of a theatrical nature as a temporary reversible exercise in the face of the durability of the architecture on which it is acted.
Located at this point, breaking the predominant geometry in the existing architecture helps us to show our intrusion as an actor who speaks in other different terms, who is not governed, at least in a significant percentage, by the same laws the own conception of the building.
That is why this project is born from a 45º turn on the master lines of the building and, from this, an ambiguous space is configured, largely undefined in terms of functionality and that allows infinite uses and appropriations.
A space understood as a theatrical stage where nothing is quite what it seems, precisely with the intention that it can be anything.
Again, the most basic geometry ends up defining the appropriation of space. The transparencies that appear allow us to progressively discover the different rooms, the visuals designed almost like ship hatches and the eclectic decoration emphasizes, once again, that theatrical character that affects that idea of temporality.
