Colliding droplets instead of digital 0s and 1s. Surface Tension by aircode

The release of her new album, Surface Tension, producer, sound designer, and DJ «aircode», alias of Julia Svensson (originally from Sweden), collaborates with filmmaker Federico Barni to create a set of sonic landscapes become the soundtrack to a piece of cinematic science fiction, in music video form.

Musing on developments around liquid-based computers, the short film’s themes navigate the slippery concept of this strange and potentially sentient machine, the film shapes a surreal world that runs in parallel to our own.

Barni explains the concept:

“Liquid-based computers are hypothetical devices that use colliding droplets instead of digital 0s and 1s.

The film imagines the employees of a start-up losing their reason grappling with this fascinating and baffling idea. Bubbles and waves, like droplets, are ripples and distortions in a liquid’s surface tension, so they became part of the language of this imaginary machine and overtime reverie.”
