AMO, the research and ideas lab of the architecture firm OMA, presents "Vyrao Mercer," a sensory experience installation for Vyrao, located on Mercer Street in Soho, New York City. The street is known for its mix of high-end retail stores and its unique atmosphere.

The recent installation of Vyrao materializes energy, nature, fragrances, and emotions in a tangible and interactive space, formalized through various geometries and totems carefully selected to positively engage the visitor.

The ephemeral installation designed by AMO is composed of diverse shapes and totems, each carefully selected for its energetic significance. Each totemic display, housed within curtain-lined pockets, references a specific Vyrao fragrance. In the center, a pedestal showcases Vyrao products and can be transformed into a table for several people. The interplay of materials and layers of light enhances the visitor's perception of the brand's philosophy.

Towards the back, an intimate lounge invites contemplation, with curved seating and a semicircular basin. Above, a textile cylinder channels natural light from the skylight, connecting the space to its energy source. The modular symbols developed for the displays are designed to be scalable and adaptable, ensuring continuity in future ephemeral installations, retail spaces, and flagship stores.

Project description by AMO

Vyrao Mercer is a collaborative installation by AMO and Vyrao that explores the materialization of energy and nature. Inspired by Vyrao’s motto, “energy is everything,” the pop-up translates sensory experimentation into a physical environment for interaction and exchange.

The installation works within the existing architecture of a former clothing store, organizing the space into zones of varying tempos that are unified by a continuous soft curtain. Near the entrance, a dynamic corridor pulses with projected imagery, ambient sound, and visitor movement. Mirrors serve as Vyrao’s signage while amplifying the energy of the space.

At the core, curtain-lined pockets feature totemic display stands, each referencing energy waveforms that evoke distinct frequencies. A central pedestal showcases Vyrao’s products and can convert into a communal dining table. Translucent and metallic materials, layered with light, create a ceremonial atmosphere that reflects Vyrao’s ethos of elevated sensory experience.

Toward the rear, an intimate lounge invites pause, with curved seating and a vessel forming a semi-circle. Above, a textile cylinder channels natural light from the skylight, connecting the space to its energetic source.

The modular symbols developed for the display stands are scalable and adaptable, designed to extend across future pop-ups, retail spaces, and flagship stores.

AMO is the think tank of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), co-founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1999. Applying architectural thinking to domains beyond building, AMO has worked with Prada, the European Union, Universal Studios, Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, Condé Nast, Harvard University, and the Hermitage. It has produced exhibitions, including Expansion and Neglect (2005) and When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013 (2013) at the Venice Biennale; The Gulf (2006), Cronocaos (2010), Public Works (2012), and Elements of Architecture (2014) at the Venice Architecture Biennale; and Serial Classics and Portable Classics (both 2015) at Fondazione Prada, Milan and Venice, respectively.

AMO often works in parallel with OMA's clients to fertilize architecture with intelligence from this array of disciplines. This is the case with Prada: AMO's research into identity, in-store technology, and new possibilities of content-production in fashion helped generate OMA's architectural designs for new Prada epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles. In 2004, AMO was commissioned by the European Union to study its visual communication, and designed a coloured "barcode" flag – combining the flags of all member states – that was used during the Austrian presidency of the EU.

AMO has worked with Universal Studios, Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Heineken, Ikea, Condé Nast, Harvard University and the Hermitage. It has produced exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale, including The Gulf (2006), Cronocaos (2010) and Public Works (2012) and for Fondazione Prada including When Attitudes Become Form (2012) and Serial and Portable Classics (2015). AMO, with Harvard University, was responsible for the research and curation of the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale and its principle publication Elements. Other notable projects are a plan for a Europe-wide renewable energy grid; Project Japan, a 720-page book on the Metabolism architecture movement (Taschen, 2010); and the educational program of Strelka Institute in Moscow.
