De Zonneboom, multifunctional accommodation by Drost + van Veen architecten, a successful Dutch practice in Rotterdam. In the past 19 years they have managed to realize a portfolio of buildings that either strongly merge into the context of the surrounding landscape or prominently stand out like beacons.

They present to you two of their projects.-

De Zonneboom, multifunctional accommodation, houses a number of functions, such as two primary schools, a child daycare centre, an extramural facility, a sports hall, neighbourhood community care functions, and a café. This multitude of functions has been accommodated under an outspoken roof shape, a reference to the typical traditional Oosseld roofs in the neighbourhood. The fresh allure of the building is generated by the light tints of the traditional façade tiles, which give the large volume a playful appearance and an own character. The many users of the building have been positioned around the central hall. Spacious voids ensure good visibility, from which the functions on the upper floors also benefit. The classrooms are based on an open lesson structure.
