Architecture studio B-architecten has completed a new event hall on an elongated plot located next to the train station in Knokke-Heist, a municipality in the Flanders region, north of the city of Bruges, in Belgium.

The building, determined by the curved shape of its plot, houses a central room with different functions such as rehearsal rooms that generate an acoustic buffer for the room and whose roofs fit with the roofs of the buildings that surround it.

The two-story lobby of the event hall designed by B-architecten opens to the mezzanine, the rehearsal rooms on the first floor, and the terraces surrounding the train tracks. The event hall can be divided in two by a columned walkway that extends along its length and offers views from the mezzanine to the hall and outside.

The flat roof of the event hall is sunken to prevent the technical installations and ventilation grilles from being visible. The rest of the roofs adapt to the heights of the buildings that surround them, also varying the height of their facades. In this way, the sloping roof on the park side is lower than the one facing the train tracks, which is higher and longer.

Description of project by B-architecten

Design of a new events hall next to Knokke-Heist railway station, built on an outstretched parcel.

The design was determined by the large, curved shape of its plot. The building is composed as a playful volume, containing a central hall packed out with wider functions such as rehearsal rooms that create an acoustic buffer for the hall. Its contemporary roof fits in with the hipped and gabled roofs of the surrounding buildings, while the sloping character brings intrigue to the interior spaces around the hall.

The flat roof of the events hall itself is sunken, so that technical installations and ventilation grilles are not visible. The façades vary in height, thus relating to the surrounding buildings; the sloping roof on the park side is drawn as low as possible, while the elongated, high façade facing the tracks stands confidently, refined with textural concrete layering and strategically chosen openings.

Inside, the two-storey entrance hall generously opens onto the mezzanine, the first floor rehearsal rooms and outdoor terraces bordering the railway track. The spacious hall can be divided into two, while a collonaded walkway spanning the full length offers Ravelingen party-goers bonus epic views from the mezzanine into the hall and outdoors.

B-architecten, B-bis, B-city, B-juxta. Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten was born. The three had met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. At the internationally oriented Berlage Institute, it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office is located in Antwerp and Brussels.

Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, they started a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten became an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design.

In 2020, B-city was launched as a third B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts.

Today, B is the sum of four studio divisions called B-architecten, B-bis, B-city and B-juxta have naturally grown into an office of more than 60 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.
