BAAS arquitectura and h3o architects won the competition, organized by BIMSA, to renovate the historic complex of the former Hospital de la Santa Creu in Barcelona. Their proposal, titled "De les Rambles a la Santa Creu" ("From La Rambla to Santa Creu"), aims to open the complex up to the Raval neighbourhood, connect Plaça de la Gardunya with Carrer de les Egipcíaques, and restore the heritage value of one of Barcelona’s most significant Gothic complexes.

The intervention includes the renovation and expansion of the facilities for the Library of Catalonia (Biblioteca de Catalunya) and the future District Library, as well as the restoration of the theater, the chapel, the ICUB (Barcelona Institute of Culture) offices, and various common areas. The project has an estimated construction budget of approximately 29.6 million euros.

Under the theme "From Les Rambles to La Santa Creu," the proposal by BAAS arquitectura and h3o architects views the rehabilitation of the complex as an opportunity to restore its role within the Raval neighbourhood. The project aims to transform a site that is currently enclosed and difficult to navigate into a heritage, cultural, and urban space that is more accessible, permeable, and integrated into the neighborhood’s everyday pedestrian routes.

Opening the complex to the Raval
One of the project’s main operations by BAAS arquitectura and h3o architects is the creation of a new cross-route connecting Plaça de la Gardunya with Carrer de les Egipcíaques through the courtyards and interior spaces of the former hospital.

This new connection will integrate the complex into the Raval’s network of public spaces, improve access to its different facilities, and recover its courtyards and gardens as open, shared spaces.

A new entrance from Plaça de la Gardunya
The project proposes a new entrance façade onto Plaça de la Gardunya through a portico of pilasters attached to the existing building. This intervention organises the different volumes that currently shape the façade and creates a new gateway to the complex.

The portico is conceived as an extension of the square’s public space and as an element capable of activating its perimeter. The intervention combines respect for the traces of the historic building with new openings that make the façade more accessible and permeable.

Cracks of light
The proposal begins with the heterogeneous character of the former Hospital de la Santa Creu, a complex made up of buildings constructed and transformed over different historical periods.

Rather than unifying these different pieces, the project highlights the spaces where they meet. Existing cracks and voids become intermediate spaces that bring in natural light and ventilation, aid orientation, and make the evolution of the complex legible.

These cracks of light also accommodate the new vertical and horizontal circulation for the different facilities, becoming the element that articulates the intervention.

A new landmark for the neighbourhood
The entrance to the District Library from Plaça de la Gardunya is conceived as a large public foyer that continues the route towards the historic garden of the former Hospital de la Santa Creu.

This space receives natural light through the shaft of a former staircase, topped by a new skylight. At dusk, the skylight is illuminated and becomes a visible point of reference from the square and the surrounding streets.

With this intervention, BAAS arquitectura and h3o architects propose recovering the former Hospital de la Santa Creu as an open and accessible heritage complex connected to the cultural and urban life of the Raval.

BAAS Arquitectura is an architecture practice founded in 1994 in Barcelona by architect Jordi Badia (Barcelona, 1961). He graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) in 1989. Between 1989 and 1993, he worked alongside architect Tonet Sunyer before establishing his own practice.

Since its foundation, BAAS Arquitectura has worked on projects of different scales and programmes, including residential buildings, offices, educational facilities, healthcare buildings, cultural spaces and interventions in architectural heritage. Its work is characterised by a careful consideration of the urban context, the use of materials and the relationship between architecture and public space. The restoration and adaptation of existing buildings to new uses also play an important role in the studio's practice.

Among its best-known works are the Can Framis Museum in Barcelona, which received the 2009 City of Barcelona Award and the FAD Opinion Award; the conversion of the former Oliva Artés factory into a branch of the Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA); the renovation of the Alta Diagonal office building; and the FAD headquarters in Barcelona.

Internationally, one of its most notable projects is the Faculty of Radio and Television at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland (2017), designed in collaboration with GRUPA 5 Architekci and Małeccy Biuro Projektowe. The building received the Brick Award 2020 and was shortlisted for the 2019 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. More recent projects include the Llull 122 building and the Vall d'Hebron Research Centre (VHIR), the latter developed in collaboration with ESPINET/UBACH.

Alongside his architectural practice, Jordi Badia teaches in the Department of Architectural Design at ETSAB, where he has been a professor since 2001. He has also collaborated with universities in Hong Kong, Ljubljana, Toulouse and Zurich. He has written for the newspaper ARA and served as editor of the architecture blog HIC Arquitectura.

In 2012, together with Félix Arranz, he curated VOGADORS, the exhibition representing Catalonia and the Balearic Islands at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale. His career brings together architectural practice, teaching and the dissemination of architecture, with a particular interest in the relationship between buildings, the city and its inhabitants.

H3o Architects is a Barcelona-based architecture firm formed by Adrià Orriols, Joan Gener and Miquel Ruiz. Their practice promotes innovative and speculative designs in the fields of architecture and urbanism, facing the challenges of contemporary society. Climate change, social responsibility and the hybridization of human and non-human realities are at the core of each project.

In the field of theory, the studio investigates the membrane as the epidermis of architecture and its social, political and ecological implications. Among its projects are the conversion of the Convent of the Poor Clares into the new library in Arenys de Mar, the 155-unit housing block at Kop-Dakpark (Rotterdam), the winner of the Europan 15 Rotterdam Award, the renaturalization of the square in Castell d'Aro, and the new residence for the elderly in Es Migjorn Gran, Menorca, all of them ongoing projects.
