The London Borough of Wandsworth is inviting multi-disciplinary design teams from across the world to take part in a lively and interactive competition, to produce a concept design for a new cycle and pedestrian bridge across the River Thames in London, between Nine Elms and Pimlico. The purpose of the competition is to identify the best team, capable of designing and delivering a unique landmark bridge for this part of London and to explore what the various design options might be; it is not to select a specific design.

This competition is calling for architects from across the globe to come forward with exceptional, inspiring designs for a new bridge at the centre of the world’s greatest city. The successful entry will have to win the hearts of Londoners who are tremendously proud of their river and its rich architectural heritage.
There are considerable challenges and engineering feats to overcome. The design must work alongside the cutting edge architecture emerging on the south bank as well as the elegant frontages on the north. The landing points on both sides must integrate sensitively with their surroundings and provide a smooth and safe experience for the pedestrian and cyclists who use it.
This bridge is also a badly needed and valuable piece of infrastructure for London. It has a very strong transport case, will support the city’s growth and has significant funding commitments already in place. Developing an inspiring, beautiful design will allow us to take the project to the next stage and ensure this project comes off the page into reality in a much shorter timeframe.
The competition seeks expressions of interest, supported by evidence of pertinent technical awareness and design innovation at Stage 1. Public exhibitions will be held, showcasing the design element of each submission.
At Stage 2, shortlisted competitors will be asked to develop their design ideas for the actual site, including formal dialogue with the client and key stakeholders on both sides of the river, and public exhibitions to engage the wider community. All shortlisted competitors will be asked to complete a formal Invitation to Tender.
Deadline for Stage 1A submissions: no later than 12 noon on 13 January 2015
An honorarium will be paid to second stage shortlisted competitors.
A design focused Jury Panel, chaired by Graham Stirk of Rogers Stirk Harbour, will evaluate all Stage 1 and Stage 2 submissions.
