Architecture studios Anna Prats Joan Valls + Roger Panadès made a new façade adapting the interior of the Cercle Calongí Society building, located in the Plaza Mayor de Calogne, in Girona and donated by the entity to the City Council for its transformation into a recreational and cultural space.

The elements that are intervened in the heritage building, as included in the transfer, are the main room and the rear patio of the building, with access from Anselm Clavé Street, to which new access is added from the creation of a plaza and the erection of a new façade, offering the project a more public and close character.
By reinterpreting the building in a contemporary way, Anna Prats Joan Valls + Roger Panadès architects faces the challenge of giving the space a versatile and accessible character. Where the backdrop was, a large door opens that connects directly to the patio, responding to the needs of the project and making it easier for activities to take place both inside and outside.

Emphasizing the characteristic structure of the project, based on ceramic walls with vertical axes of arches, the studio creates a new façade that combines openwork brick and solid brick for the ties and the formation of lattices.

Project description by Anna Prats Joan Valls + Roger Panadès

The building of Cercle Calongí society, inaugurated in 1924, is located in the main square of Calonge old town. The organization has recently ceded part of the building to the City Council to be renewed as a cultural public facility. The assignment includes the concert hall and a patio, with access from the back street.

The main challenge is to provide a new access through the courtyard and change its character to represent a public facility, offering a new facade towards a new square. Where the backdrop was, a large door is opened to connects directly to the patio, favoring versatility and being able to hold events that mix the interior with the exterior.

The heritage building is characterized by a succession of ceramic walls with three vertical axes of arcades. The new façade uses this concept in a contemporary way, combining the use of perforated and solid bricks and a composition of lattices in openings.
