50 GALLERIES FROM 15 COUNTRIES AT THE SWAB FAIR BARCELONA 2011
Fira of Barcelona, May 26th to 29th
Swab's General Programme is enhanced by new galleries from Europe and America
The General Programme presents numerous galleries that participated in previous iterations (Suzanne Tarasiève, París, Bonelli Arte Contemporanea, Mantua, Jarmuschek+Partner, Berlín, Pabellón 4, Buenos Aires, Fred Ltd, London...) in addition to 9 Barcelonan galleries, that demonstrate the Catalonian industry's support of the fair, and other relevant Spanish, European and American galleries that join the Swab spirit (Espacio Líquido, Gijon, Pedro Cera, Lisbon, Maaret Finnberg, Turku, La Nueva Galería, Medellin...)
New Programmes: MYFAF, Solo Projects, Residencies and CCCB
Underscoring the fresh and innovative outlook that Swab has developed in the three previous fairs, the programme My First Art Fair, MYFAF, includes four new galleries selected through an open international call for applicants: Artecocodrilo, Monterrey (Mexico), Collectiva, Poznan-Tulce (Poland), Charlot, Paris, and Scaramouche, New York.
The Solo Projects programme, which will feature 6 galleries from Paris, Oporto and Santander, will be conducted by Lab'Bel, the Bel Group's art lab, consisting of the curators Laurent Fievet and Silvia Guerra.
Lab'Bel responded to Swab's invitation by developing a multifaceted approach to the theme of the status of the artist in contemporary art. Their central project consists in curating the six individual projects by artists presented by the galleries in the fair's Solo Projects Programme: Isabelle Le Minh (Christophe Gaillard, Paris) Alejandra Laviada (Bendana-Pinel, Paris) Quentin Armand (Galerie E.G.P, Paris) Raúl Hevia (Galería Nuble, Santander) Mauro Cerqueira (Galería Nuno Centeno, Oporto) and Jean Denant (L.A. Gallery, Plaissan).
These artists will be united with others invited by Lab'Bel, selected from three known European artist residences: Gasworks (London), Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and Hangar (Barcelona) in a group show titled "Art for Life, Art for a living", whose spatial arrangement was designed by Petit Cabanon, the architectural research platform that Inés Moreira directs in Oporto.
A two-day programme of discussions, on May 28th and 29th at the CCCB Centro de Cultura Contemporànea of Barcelona, on the theme of the artist's current condition will complement the reflection that Lab'Bel has put forth.
Swab takes over the city: design, street art and private collecting in OFF Swab.
The presence of Swab 2011 in the city of Barcelona is guaranteed by the innovative proposals of the Kognitif platform, which has scheduled urban events to engage creators, art and design students and children. "Swab Stairs" has invited students from the design schools IED, IDEP, La Llotja and Pau Gargallo to produce installations in four of Barcelona's underground rail stations. Two projects "Ciutat Nova" and "Ciutat Bella" will fill the Raval district with artistic imagery and other public spaces in the city of Barcelona will be stages for performances by a group of international artists, including Hanno Milesi and Jan Vormann.
The fair's OFF programme also presents the exhibition curated by Mónica Álvarez Careaga Drawing, representation and discourse in the private collections of contemporary art in Barcelona, at the exhibition space of the Architecture Association of Catalonia.
Collectors and Sponsors Programme
Mónica Álvarez Careaga will also be responsible for the Swab Collectors Programme, which will offer guests at the fair the exclusive opportunity to meet some of the most important private collectors in Catalonia: Sunyol, Cal Cego, Olor Visual, Josep María Civit, Alorda Derksen and Juan Redón among them. An unforgettable experience for which Swab is partnering with Barcelona's major dining, entertainment and hotel establishments: the restaurants A Contraluz, Sala Cabaret Berlín, Shôko, Hotel Barceló Raval...
Once again in 2011 Swab enjoys the institutional support of the government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Town Hall, in addition to that of several companies: MANGO, its main sponsor, Fundació Banc Sabadell and Absolut Vodka, and it embarks on a promising collaboration with Volkswagen and Nike.
